Sounds like a poor plan to me. Maybe he should get a cheaper computer
and/or sound card and spend more on monitors. What's the point of
having a great sounding sound card when you can't hear what it's
doing?

Carvin make some for that price, do not know how they are. But they
are a respectable company. They only deal direct, unless your in LA.

It's the new way... pay mega bucks for the computer but don't buy any
outboard gear. After all, you can get software to model a u-87, right??
I agree, get a cheaper computer and better monitors.

It's what he wants (the computer) the monitors he's throwing in as an
extra charge to the credit card and can't swing and more money.
So, the computer is set in stone and the budget for the monitors is
$500
I have been reading the reviews of the BX8, they sound good from the
reviews. The truth, from reviews seem to have a high frequency hum,
from some users.
OK back to this problem...
BX8 or other?

I tend to agree, as well. Get better monitors up front. First off, what
is this system to be used for? You probably can do more than you think
with a Mac that is a step or two down. That will save you enough money
to buy some better monitors.
Look at it this way, the computer you buy today will be on it's way into
obsolescence in a year. At that time you will probably consider
upgrading. By then you will probably have figured out what you don't
like about your cheaper monitors. Now you are looking at upgrading both
your computer and monitors. Your monitors are going to last you a good
long time, your computer will not.

Then he should save his money until he can swing better monitors.
Unless he prefers to throw money away. This is like buying a $4,000
wide screen TV and not being able to afford a DVD player.

They'll get sound to his ears. If that's all that's important, then go
for it. But he should at least give them a listen and not buy based on
written reviews. Also check out the Tapco monitors. They have the
right heritage.
