View Full Version : Joystick panners for Pro Tools HD?

We're doing more and more surround stuff and the need for surround panners is
becoming obvious. When I used to use the console (a D&R Cinemix) for surround
assignments I got spoiled by the two joysticks. Now that we're mixing "in the
box" on a PT HD3 system, we're desparate for something other than mice. I
still want to keep the Cinemix as the centerpiece of the studio. I don't want
a Pro Control or a Tascam consolette, and I can't afford an Icon (which doesn't
even have joysticks available yet!).
What, if any, are my options?
TIA!

Digital Performer does surround panning from the mixer window, Quad up to 7.1.
I'm surprised PT doesn't incorporate this.

Edit Pack? Don't know if that works without ProControl or not, but it
does have two motorized joysticks.

It does. I should have made it clearer: I'm looking for a dedicated hardware
device to write and edit pan automation. Mice and trackballs don't do it for
me. Neither does a Wacom tablet. I want a joystick.

Oh, OK, can't help you there, since I think you already dismissed the Tascam
controller. That's the only hardware joystick I've seen thus far.

Surely you can assign panning to a MIDI controller. I remember (but
not enough to tell someone exactly how) that people were using a Kaos
pad for surround panning on a Mackie d8b mixer by making it send MIDI
continuous controller messages that correspond to X and Y motion on
the pad, then assigning those controllers to surround panning.

3M makes a joystick mouse. Was called a Renaissance mouse, but I
believe they changed the name.
