View Full Version : Audobe Audition 1.5 upgrade and presets back-up

Michael Putrino
June 4th 04, 06:35 PM
Hi all,

I will be upgrading to version 1.5. If anyone has already done this,
does the upgrade clear all your user-created effects presets?

In order to back up the presets prior to installation of the upgrade,
does one still just save the "cool.ini" file? I'm not on my home
system, so I can't check right now if it even exists in Adobe Audition
anymore, or if it's now called something else. If so, what file do I
back-up in order to save said presets before the upgrade?

Thanks for the help.

Sorry, I don't have any answers, but I will be upgrading in the next couple
of weeks. Looks like some worthwhile upgrades, although I don't like that
they took out the CD burning capability for the change-over then made it a
feature on the "upgrade."

And I don't like that it's XP only. Heavy sigh. If I have
to change OS's it won't be to one that will inevitably
obsolete itself yet again when the cash cow needs plumping.

They say it uses "technologies" only available in XP. Such as?

I believe that the official statement includes Win2K. The Windows API was
enhanced for Win2K, and I believe that is what they are talking about. As I
recall, Win2k broke CEP 1.x pretty well, and necessitated an update.
http://www.abcdv.com/article/articleview/289/1/81

"Adobe Audition 1.5 for Windows® 2000 and Windows XP® will be available in
the second calendar quarter of 2004 for the estimated street price of
US$299. Registered users of Adobe Audition 1.0 or Cool Edit Pro 2.x can
upgrade for an estimated street price of US$69. Registered users of Cool
Edit Pro 1.x or Cool Edit 2000 can upgrade to the new version for an
estimated street price of US$169."

The hot features of Audition 1.5 are "Frequency Space Editing" , built-in
CD burning, and support for VST plug-ins.

I use Feurio for CD burning.
I get my VST plugins via a DirectX interface
and WTH is Frequency Space Editing?

Looks like I won't be upgrading.

Over on the Adobe forums, there is ample evidence that people have received
and installed it.

I've been using the beta burning interface that was available for CEP 2.1. I
find integrated burning to be very advantageous, especially given all the
DAO burning that I do.

I beleve that the Audition update is just an Adobe-supported DX wrapper.

For $69, I probably will. Just waiting for a downloadable upgrade.

I was hasty. Frequency space editing looks like a tool I could really use.

And who in the world can resist built-in autotune? <G>

The word-of-mouth on the Frequency Space editing feature is already
excellent. Everybody who does live recording has some coughs and other
noises they want to get rid of. This might be the feature that the
competition has to scramble to duplicate.

I have some vocalists that I'll be sure to test it out on.

I have Audition now and am wondering if this feature will give me
anything more than what it already has in terms of function. You can
already do "frequency space editing" by looking at the spectral view,
selecting across time, then going into the filter->FFT window or
whatever and manually setting the frequency according to what you saw
visually in the spectral window.

My assumption is that Audition 1.5 only adds the convenience of clicking
and dragging in the spectral window and then automatically, rather than
manually/visually forwarding that low-to-high frequency range into
another window.

Is this true?

Similar question: Audition/CE/CEP already had time-stretch pitch-shift
functionality, but it was a very rudimentary algorithm. Is Audition 1.5
only going to add a user interface layer to this inadequate algorithm,
or is the fundamental algorithm improved?

I have the same question. I can hardly imagine trying to do
autotune with that old algorithm so am hoping they went
state of the art with pitch and time scaling.

I'd like to know, too, if they've added a phase and/or group
delay plot to the FFT analysis or allowed any interaction
between it and the FFT filter.

Never mind...I found the audition.ini file in the c:/Documents and
Settings/[user]/Application Data/Adobe/Audition/1.0 directory.

I'll back that up...even though I presume Audition 1.5 will go in its
own directory.

THAT, and the property of being able to use/store bringalong presets
(basically the same thing, but with the difference of keeping
broughtalong presets completely separate from the installation used)
that are stored on removable media is something it appears they still
need to work on.

The new version is out. My copy showed up yesterday. I ripped off
the shrink.... loaded the CD into the machine... and discovered that
it only supports XP. As I'm running WinME... it failed. So... it
will sit on the shelf, as I have no intention of upgrading the
machine.

Anyone have a copy of CoolEdit 2000 w/all the add-on modules? I think
that's what I'm going to go to, and keep this one on the shelf so I
have a 'legal license'.

Speaking of which I love this quote from the DigitalVideoEditing
article:

perhaps with a better singer)"

Unless, of course, it decides to overwrite the 1.0 directory without warning :-(

It will do windows 2000 too, and w2k sp4 is really really nice, but you
may feel that disk access is slower than under ME. That at least was my
experience while my daw was a multibooter. If you budget tolerates it,
then go get yourself a street legal w2k prof while it is available even
if you do not want to upgrade now.

------------------------------
I installed version 1.5 without a hitch. Old presets from version 1.0
were still there in v1.5 without me having to do anything but install
the program...very nice. It created a new directory called
c:/Documents and Settings/[user]/Application Data/Adobe/Audition/1.5
where the new audition.ini file resides that gets seeded from the one
in the 1.0 directory.

It also keeps both versions of the probram installed, so you can use
both, or either.

I like the way VSTs are handled now. A lot less delay.
