It's been awhile... I'm wondering if anyone knows about their current mics.
Are the days of re-badged Shures and PZMs over? Do they have anything
useable? I have a gift certificate for a crappy mall and couldn't think of
anything else to buy. If anyone has the scoop on their current stuff lets
hear it!

Adapters/connectors/batteries/SPL meters/radio controlled toys....

..... would you like a cell phone with that?

They have the 9V lithium batteries, which they sell (at pretty high markup)
as smoke alarm batteries. Their cheaper analogue sound level meter is pretty
good, too.

PZMs are gone. The lav mike that Paul Stamler liked so much is gone.
Dunno about rebadged Shures.

Thanks for the heads up on the sound level meter Scott!

Actually they have a couple Shure dynamics (radioshack.com) that are not
rebadged at all. I wonder what the same mics are called in the Shure product
line?

It looks like their champion cheap rebadged Koss phones are gone, but
there are some new phones on there, including a Seinnheiser (sic) and Koss
pair. Like everything else Shack, the 49$ "radioshack" closed ear phones are
probably a rebadge, but I dont recognize the model.

I bought one of the analog sound level meters awhile back,
and the probably clueless sales droid indicated it that it
was being discontinued. Don't know if that's really true,
but you might want to move quickly just in case.

They have small speakers in sexy white metal boxes that work well for studio
talkback purposes.
Also their connectors are no longer made from exotic ****ty unidentifiable
recycled metal that solder does not adhere to.

They sell a very short (ca. 8") AC extension cord that I find useful as a
way of plugging multiple 2-prong wall warts into AC mults; wish they made
a 3-prong equivalent, but the one they have is definitely useful.

Recently I found a $15 (!) digital audio format converter that converts
S/P-DIF coaxial to optical or vice versa. Though sold with a little wall
wart, it can be rigged to work from a 9 Volt battery for hours on end,
and it seems to work OK.

In a pinch I'll buy their alkaline batteries and they also have a rather
wide assortment of rechargeables, though with a little advance planning
one can surely find better prices through pro audio sources.

They sell a ton of the "Zip Zap" micro miniature cars, they are really
cool. Amazing how cheap RF toys are these days, even small airplanes.

Anyway they still have some small Minimus speakers I think, and when you
need a couple of diodes there ain't too many places you can walk into and
pickup a couple on a Saturday afternoon...

I think they are from Shure's PG series of mics. I don't know this
for a fact, but I suspect the PG's use cartridges designed for the SM
series that didn't quite meet spec. but not actually bad.
If you go with RS's higher priced mics, you will probably be pleased
with them
(for cheap mics.).

They are very different than the old PZMs, and they aren't made on license
to Crown any more. For one thing, the diaphragm is perpendicular to the
plane of the rear plate instead of parallel to it (as in the Crown patent).

Might be just as good, but it's not the same. Dunno.

At my local Radio Shack stores (and I assume all stores that still
sell components) they've taken the blister packs off the rack and
consolidated them into a couple of cabinets. The parts I'm looking for
are now much easier to find (if they have them at all) because they
don't have resistors in four different places on the wall.

The digital one is harder to follow with your eyes, which is an
excellent reason to use the analog one.

When dealing with sound level, unless it's something constant (like a
sine wave) it's useful to take an eyeball average of a constantly
changing reading. Most of us find that easier to do with an analog
meter than watching digits flip on an LCD.

That was never "my" show, but I do fill in on occasion on that and a few
things. I have decided I hate the sound of the Calrec Sigma they have up there
in that room. The micpres sound like mosquitos, they have a small amount of
analog gain (maybe 30db?) and the rest is done in the digital domain - yuck.

Anyway mostly just the daytime news wheel for a hour or two, "The Big
Story with John Gibson" or "Your World w/ Neil Cavuto" 4 days a week, and then
voiceovers and some of the preproduced weekend shows tapings like Cal Thomas,
Fox Weekend Magazine, Sunday Best, Cavuto Weekend...
