View Full Version : Sony Screw-On 1/8" to 1/4" Headphone adapters?

Is it possible to buy these without buying a whole new set of headphones? I
asked at a local Sony Store and they told me they didnt carry them but said
that they are generic and available at Radio Shack. When I asked the guys at
Radio Shack the first guy looked at me like I was crazy and then his
coworker said that they dont carry them. Extensive digging through both the
Sony and Radio Shack web sites has been no help either. Anybody know
anything about this? Thanks in advance.
BTW, I'm in Canada, if that makes any difference (maybe they dont bother
making the part available up here?)

There is no such thing as a generic screw-on adapter.
I haven't seen every headphone ever made, but Sony was the only company that had
screw-on adapters AFAIK (the MDR-CD6, for example) and apparently no longer
makes them, as they add to the cost. Everyone else uses friction-fit.
Other than keeping the adapter from getting lost, you don't need a screw-on
adapter. Any 1/8" jack to 1/4" plug adapter will do.

AKG had them on some models also. I have a pair of K 240 DF with the
screw-on
adapter.

If push comes to shove, slip on a RS adapter plug and shrink tube it in
place.

The problem with making them screw-on is that some headphones have slightly
different plugs than others, so there is no "one size fits all" screw-on
adapter.
Radio Shack does make 1/8" -> 1/4" adapters like this:
http://www.radioshack.com/search.asp?cookie%5Ftest=1&find=headphone+adapter&hp
=search&image1.x=31&image1.y=24&SRC=1
which just snap on. But no screw-on.
You might do what a lot of pros do: remove the hated 1/8" connector and just
solder on a standard stereo 1/4" plug instead. Be warned that the type of
cable used by many Sony 'phones is a little difficult to work with.

I always figured that putting a 1/8" plug on at the factory (almost
always at the end of a flimsy cord) was the manufacturer's way of
saying "not designed for professional or strenuous use".

Most (in the sense of quantity, not model numbers) consumer products use 1/8"
jacks, so it's no surprise headphone makers have largely switched.
It also makes sense to put a 1/4" adapter on an 1/8" plug, because the other way
'round is likely to put a lot of stress on an 1/8" jack.
All my headphones have "native" 1/8" plugs (mostly Sennheiser, plus my beloved
Sony MDR-CD6). I simply put adapters in 1/4" jacks and leave them there.

Nope, it's not. I just bought two of these to replace the originals on my

I have a 1/4" plug that I want to plug into a 1/8"th plug. And I am
having a tough time finding a converter.
Dose one excist?
If so Where?

Most dealers are Hosa dealers, or as mentioned, Radio Shack should have 'em.

I'd stay away from the one-piece adapters like what Radio Shack sells.
Mini jacks are notoriously flimsy, and hanging an adapter plus a 1/4"
plug on the jack is a sure route to premature failure of the jack.
They're bad enough with just the stress of an 1/8" plug. The 1/4" plug
plus adapter is a long lever prying on the jack contacts inside the
unit.
The best solution is to cut off the 1/4" plug and replace it with a
1/8" plug. If you have to also use it with a device with a 1/4" jack,
you can safely adapt small-to-large with a similar kind of adapter.

Radio Shack will sell you one that does not screw-in.
The screw-on ones all have different threads, so you will probably have to
get one from the vendor that sold your headphones. The Sony ones and the
Beyer ones will not interchange.

I have a love hate with those Sony adapters. Always misplacing them but
they are clever with the threads.
Try this number I think it's the gold plated version. It's 14.95 but in

Well, you know that would be my preference, but I recongnize that this
is almost never practical. Otherwise I would have drilled out my

The Rat Shack version is a generic snap-on type that works fine.
However, my local Guitar Center recently (within the past year) started
carrying the exact replacement adapter, Sony-branded even, in quantity.
So, they're out there...
