View Full Version : Q: No dither going straight to MP3?

Hi all. I'm using Logic Pro and am bouncing some tracks straight to
MP3. When I bounce to a non-compressed format, like WAV, I'm given
the option to dither (using POW) my 24bit music down to 16bit.
However, going to MP3, I'm not given that option.

I just want a sanity check here. A reasonable theory is that the MP3
is some wacky variable bit, so the encoding is doing some
psychoacoustically-blessed dithering anyway.

Please confirm this corollary: It would be worse to bounce to a
dithered WAV and then encode to MP3 than to encode directly to MP3
(with no POW dithering) from my 24bit signal. In other words, if my
end-product is going to be something like MP3 or AAC, then dithering
just isn't something I should tell my DAW to do.

thanks,
david
