View Full Version : Recommendation for single-space rack-mount AM/FM tuner?

I'm looking for something designed for commercial or broadcast market,
and prefer balanced outputs, but unbalanced is okay. No wall
warts--must have integral AC power supply, and an external antenna
connection is a must. Would like a decent user interface and display.
I've googled without finding anything recent. Any recommendations?
Thanks,
Heath

Why is it so important that it be 1U?

Not much out there. Bogen might still make one. I bet Rolls still
does. If you care about RF performance and you can spare one more
rack space, you might look for an old RCA model. If you care a LOT
about RF performance and can spare two more rack spaces and a lot of
money you can look for a Sequerra.
A real sleeper, though, is the Parasound ST220 home stereo tuner.
It'll fit into 1U with a rack shelf underneath, and it is a better
performer than you'd expect for the money.

I have a Technics tuner that I mounted rack ears on. Does that count, & if so
do you want it?

the rolls RS-79B
http://www.wwbw.com/Rolls-RS79b--Rack-Mount-Tuner-i30712.music
i have several both fixed and in mobile racks
they have XLR and RCA outputs
only problem so far is a couple of the fixed units lost AM sensitivity after
a storm. they were hooked to outside mounted loop antennas.

and for about 10 times the cost you can get
http://www.inovon.com/content/products.cfm?pageID=2&prodID=48 the inovonics
630 but its internally programmed, has a modulation meter, audio loss
detect, carrier fail detect.
the outputs are screw terminal type.

Check the input preamp FET. They are static-sensitive.

Another sleeper (used) which will fit ina 1U shelf is the Harman/Kardon TU-9600, based on the Citation circuit. Has dual antenna inputs, programmable per preset.
Magnum Dynalab built some excellent stuff but it's all 2U as I recall.

Well, I suppose it doesn't really have to be 1U, but it's for a mobile
system, so equipment space is always at a premium. I figure a modern
design has no reason other than interface considerations to be larger
than 1U.

I need to be able to tune from the front panel, and although I expect
to mostly use this for FM, I'd like to have the ability to receive AM
as well.

The Sequerra is, in fact, a LOT more money than I want to spend. I'll
look for RCA tuners, but I think Rolls is going to be the winner.
Thanks to everyone for the advice,

That makes sense, but couldn't you pack a 3U tuner with some other device?
