View Full Version : A Quote to Hang on the Wall
Mike Rivers
May 30th 04, 03:56 PM
"Hype hides alternatives. It supports the notion that problems have
single solutions. Worse, it ignores inevitable trade-offs and the
doctrine of unintended consequences."
From automotive columnist Warren Brown in The Washington Post, May
30, 2004, writing about cars using alternatives to traditional
fuel.
This applies so well to audio "cure all" devices and software tools
that are so popular today.

And ever rampant in recent years, "Hype" used for things in the Entertainment
Business (movies, tv, music, etc.) *most of the time* hides lack of talent
and/or a poor quality product. Once word gets around, though, the jig is up.
And don't get me wrong, there are some quality products out there that live up
to what I call "super hype". It is no mystery though, that a quality product
usually sells itself for a long duration.

I saw it on a sign in a fishing trawler. I think it applies to studios,
too.

Hung on the wall of the customer service area of a staging/lighting

(my favourite runner up used to be a graffitti scrawled along the
very top of a block wall (at least 20 metres high) opposite a now long
gone live music venue - "Short people give me the ****s")

Or, more appropriately, one of the smartest men I've ever known said "I'm
tired of learning something new every day."
Everybody reaches their point sometime. Whether they simply lay back and
allow it to become the norm is the measure of a person.

If you say it loud enough, some people will believe it.
or
Always check the sample rate of your external clock against the sample rate
of the production you're working on twice before recording.
or
Ubiquity is its own reward

Given the number of end of school year concert recordings, I've been running

It also applies to certain over-hyped wars. If you don't think so, read
