View Full Version : Oktava's MC012: Best SDC Pair under $500?

Hey there. Seems to be that the Oktava's (matched pair from the sound
room) are the best SDC's for under $500.
These would be my first pair of SDC's. Main use would be drum OH and
acoustic guitar.
Anyone have any suggestions on mics to look at?

If you are considering strictly new check out AT 4041's. If you are
considering used look on ebay for a pair of AT 4051's. Either of these
pairs can be bought for under $500 and either pair are better than the
MC012's IMHO. Good luck.

Other microphones to audition in this class would be the Marshall MXL603, and
the Studio Projects C4.

Behringer B5s seem like possibilities as well.

They are good mikes for the money. Also check out the Crown CM-700.

Not to mention RODE NT5s.

I have both SR MC012a and Marshall MC-603 (complete with 1/2" of Mogami wire
inside - whooop-de-doo) , and find the Marshalls to be a class below the
012s.

The Crowns are OK, but I'd probably take a pair of 3 capsule MC-012's over
a pair of CM-700's, multi-capsules are more fun.

If you google this newsgroup you will find long discussions of the
MC-012's.

I have a pair of these and they sound great in every application I've
tried them. My favorite recording was using just the Stapes as an AB pair
recording a 14-piece jazz band.
