View Full Version : Cool Edit Pro --> PT

A friend has an AfroPop project that was done on Cool Edit Pro that he'd like
me to remix on ProTools (LE). Two problems -- the raw tracks reside in Kenya,
and I'm not familiar with Cool Edit Pro and its formatting -- the only tracks
I have imported so far have been from DA-88's. Can he burn and ship a CD with
individual tracks that will open up in PT? Any tips on getting him to convert
his files would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

If he can record each track (instrument) individually as a .wav file
and burn it to a CD he can send it to you and you can "wild-sync" them
into protools sessions. I have done this. He can actually save some
time by recording two tracks at a time as stereo wav files (ie: bass
left, guitar right) and then after you import them to PT you can
separate them into individual mono tracks. PT is easy to wild-sync
with because you can see the waveform and time shift tracks very
easily.

EDL Convert4. About $200.

It's actually the only solution, although I suppose each track could
be bounced to a single file...

Does Cool Edit have a bounce to disk feature? If so, bounce each
track to disk from absolute zero to the end of the song as a .wav or
..aif file, mono as mono, stereo as stereo. Then import all of the
files to tracks in PT. No track shifting or guessing involved.
Everything should "sync" up perfectly.

Yes, it does, and this is precisely how I transfered my Cool Edit Pro
files to Pro Tools. Every single track has to start at the begining of
the song...

Yes. It's called saving a mixdown file. It is what you need if the tracks
and files you are editing in Audition/CE don't all start at the same time.
If the files all start at the same time, just export them in a format that
PT supports. Audition/CE native formats are 16 bit .wav and 32 bit floating
point .wav. I believe that the PT 24 bit file format is compatible with
Audition/CE's "Type 1" 24 bit .wav format.

Easy enough to do. Mute all tracks but two, set the balance controls for one
channel to full left, the other to full right, and save a mixdown file.
Audition/CE will save files in a wide variety of formats including .wav and

I don't know why not.
