I have a Masterlink with a busted CDR drive (smd motor drive chip blew
up and burned through the 4 layer board). The incumbent CDR is (was) a
Sony CRX140 (Year 200). Tried putting in a CRX220 I had lying around
and got a startup fatal error message "CDR227" followed by a "CD Reset
fail" message. The master/slave jumper is correct. Oddly, an old
HP7200 CDR produced less threatening messages something like "I dont
recognise you and am going to sit in the corner and sulk" but at least
the harddrive section came to life. Anyone know what might be
happening here ?
cheers
Mike

You need to either get a CRX140 or update your main board PROM to a new
version that allows more recent Sony CDRs.

Call Alesis to order it. It was under $20 last I checked. It takes
about half an hour to install.
