hello everyone,

can someone recommend a more or less professional grade riaa phono
preamp so i can connect my technics turntable to a mackie mixer?
this would be for studio use, the signal would go into pro tools
eventually.

many thanks in advance

If your handy with a soldering iron Nelson Pass has a real nice phono
preamp on their DIY page. I built 2 and use one with a Grado silver
cart on my Thorens 125 table. You can get to the Pass DIY site with
this URL http://www.passdiy.com . click on preamps and its the Peal
Phono Stage . They will sell you the boards (2) and the all the
semiconductors for $80,00 bucks. All the rest of the components are
available from Mouser and Digikey. Their performance is outstanding.

Just my thoughts

It's nice to have something that produces a true audio production line
level, such as a classic audiophile preamp. I have an Apt Holman and a
Conrad Johnson preamp for that purpose. Keep your eye on eBay...

Here's the owner's manual for the Apt Holman...

Al lyou need is the preamp that goes with it! BTW, the schematic is on the
bottom cover.

Which Mackie mixer? They make models anywhere from $150 to well over
$25,000.

Assuming it's a modest one, like the 1600 series, any decent standalone
unbalanced phono preamp will work fine. I'd suggest these companies:

The Creek OBH-8 isn't bad, for under $200. I've seen it for less on eBay, so
you might try there.

A true "cost no object" professional phono preamp, like the Manley Steelhead,
could cost you $7,000+.

For a lot less, I'm a fan of the Krell preamps, since I found they had less
hum than the others I tried in my studio.

Get an Advent 300. It has the Holman preamp.

I have one with a defective amplifier section I'd be happy to sell.

Rane makes a decent phono preamp. We use them at a radio station where
I work. Yes, we still (occasionally) play vinyl.

See also http://www.vadlyd.dk/English/RIAA_and_78_RPM_preamp.html in
case you need a "full feature" product at the price such a product comes
at. No commercial affiliation, but I do know the guy, so I am not
totally unbiased.
