View Full Version : I'm not cleaning my 78's right.

I usually use a little bit of soaking time in dawn and distilled water,
followed by a cleaning on a vpi with a rinse of distilled water. But, I'm not
hearing the audible difference I do with 33's. Now, maybe it's because my 78's
generally are either thrashed or unplayed, but I'm wondering if I'm just afraid
to clean them too hard? Maybe I'm not using the right brush? I've read about
this but I thought I'd ask around anyway.

Is black gunk coming off onto the VPI?

Personally, I'd be afraid to run them through my vacuum machine, because they
will continue to shed huge amounts of gunk even after they are clean.

Remember they have abrasive material embedded into the groove to keep steel
needles sharp. The grooves aren't clean and smooth like with LPs, unless
you are fortunate to find V-Discs or DJ pressings.
