View Full Version : Inexpensive Console Recommendations

Jerry Pillsbury
May 20th 04, 09:45 PM
I am looking for a Modular 24-32 Channel Console for less than $3000.00.
Prefer older.

Considered: Allen-Heath Syncon, Soundworkshop 1600, Soundcraft TS12

Any ideas? Brokers haven't been to helpful. Got something to sell?
Recommendations? Websites?

Thanks,

Jerry

I don't know much about the Syncon, but the Sound Workshop might be a
pretty good bet. The TS12 had a lot of good ideas, but it faded from
the market so fast it's hard to know just how good is really is.

Thing about consoles of that vintage is that back then they didn't use
so many outboard processors so they tend to be a bit shy (by today's
standards) on auxilary sends. Also you'll probably have to replace
power supply filter capacitors in order to get the hum down to
"digital" quiet levels, and replacing most of the electrolytics in the
modules will almost certainly make it sound better.

Have you considered a Soundcraft 1600? That was a lot of console for
the money.

I can get a good deal on the Syncon, but very hard to get replacement parts.
Same with the Soundworkshop 1600. Really tempted on both of these. Haven't
seen a Soundcraft 1600 for sale. Know where one is at? Currently looking at
an MCI JH636 or 428. How about those?

thanks,

Jerry

Not interested in Mackie's. I have a 1604 VLZ that I rarely use (not for
recording). I am currently using an older Souncraft Spirit Studio mixer.
Nice but not enough I/O's and flexibility. I don't like the lack of a meter
bridge and I prefer the connector hookups (or hardwire) to XLR or TRS.

I am leaning heavily towards the MCI JH636 VU. Just looking to see if there
is any thing else out there that I might have overlooked.

Thanks for the comments!

Hi Jerry,

If you could add another $1000 to your budget, you could probably find a Sony
3000 in that range if you are patient. That
console gives a lot of bang for the buck and there are many aftermarket
upgrades.
It is considerably superior to the previously mentioned consoles. Wes Dooley's
excellent site has good info on it. Don't be shocked by some asking prices, I
have
seen these sell in the $4K range recently (I have one).
Good luck!

That's about what I'd expect, too, in general. If you can afford that,
go to an experienced broker/dealer/fixer like Randy Blevins
(blevinsaudio.com I think) and you'll get what you're expecting.
You'll be paying for his experience but he's got more experience with
those consoles than just about anyone and it's often worth paying for
that kind of experience.

I'm sure that, just like anything else that takes up a lot of space,
bargains show up now and then and irrationally low prices are
available if you can afford to wait.

Keep in mind that most analog console asking prices are much higher
than their actual prices.

Even though, a truly modular, professional console less than $3000?
Sure that can be found but be ready for a considerable amount of
maintenance.

I think the typical price these days on a JH636 runs in the $6k
range...if you want one for $3k it's probably gonna be in milk crates
in some dude's garage.

Although they charge more, you might want to consider Blevins Audio
Exchange, they have the parts and experience, and can get one going in
proper shape to actually record with....many of the used MCI's I've
seen for sale are more restoration projects than functional consoles.
