Hello. Currently, I'm looking into two ED12Ks. I'm fairly new to the
car audio scene, so I don't know what much means. I'd like to know
which ED12Ks to get since there are Dual 4 ohm or Single 4 ohm. I'd
like an explanation as to what those are and which I should get. I'd
also like to know the differences between 2 ch, 4 ch, and Class D
amps are.
Onto amps. I was told a JBL 1200.1 would be suitable, but it's
somewhat pricey at $300. I was also looking at an MTX Thunder1501D,
but I'm unsure if that will be able to power the speakers to the point
of good, clean bass. So I'd also like a recommendation to which amp I
should get and if it will power my subs/mids/tweets nicely.
Onto the last thing I would like a recommendation on, headunits. A
friend of mine says higher end Kenwoods are nice, and mid-high end
Alpines are good since they have crossover built in.
And if I decide not to build a box, what would you recommend for a
good sealed box with a plexiglass window that could hold both subs.
Pasted from ED site for the subs: Rec. Box Sizes: Sealed (.6-1.2cF).
I think that about covers all I need, except for mids and tweets which
I can find for myself without much of a problem.
Thanks to all who help out!

I can assure u wont be dissappointed with those ED 12K's...as for what
dual and single 4 ohm means...only more wiring options ... with two
single 4 ohm speakers u can wire either a 2 or 8 ohm load to the
amp...with two DUAL 4 ohm speakers u can wire either a 1 or 4 ohm
load...whichever suits the amp u get.
since those subs are 400wRMS EACH, then that T1501D is too big...given
the prober box size given by ED the Thunder801D would be perfect with
two single 4 ohm ED12Ks wired at 2 ohms...
the differences on 2, 4 ch amps (class A, A/B) and class D amps is
mainly sound quality...class A, A/B amps tend to run hotter than class
D but will have much better sound quality...Class D on the other hand
will run cooler but not have as good sound quality as A, A/B but since
class D is mainly for Woofers SQ doesnt matter much at the low
frequencies.
i dont think u'll find an amp to run 800wRMS to both subs AND power ur
mids/highs...best bet is get a separate amp or run them off ur HU till
u save up for one...
as for HUs...Kenwoods eXcelon line are verygood HUs as well as alpines
mid-level units...but me personally...i will never buy any other
headunit besides Eclipse PERIOD!
hpe this helps u and feel free to add any more ?s u may have or that i
didnt answer :D
and good luck with ur system [metal] [metal] [metal]

so you're recommending i go with the single 4 ohm, or would that be
the easiest route with that amp (how much is that amp, mtxaudio.com
doesn't have a price)? and what's the 2/8 ohm wiring to the amp? and
the two dual 4 ohms can wire a 1/4 ohm load? would help with a more
detailed explanation :/. everything else was answered nicely.
which components would you recommend by the way?

thankee much sir. i don't currently know my budget since i probably
won't be ordering anything until near christmas, but i could still use
some good suggestions on components since my friends dad works for
crutchfield and my other friends dad works for some company out of
seattle, so i can get some stuff for factory price if they have it.
also, are single 4 ohm better than dual or is that just preference?
and also! would a JBL 1200.1 be a nice amp for the speakers? that was
what i was originally recommended, and since i now know the price of
the mtx, the jbl is only 20 dollars more, which would be a better amp?

If you plan on going ported make sure whatever amp you get has a subsonic
filter. I know the JBL does not have a subsonic filter, I'm not sure about
the MTX.

the ONLY difference in dual and single 4 ohm subs is wiring
options...nothing more...whatever suits the amp best...
that 1200.1 is too much power for those subs...and now that i look at
it the MTX doesnt have a sub-sonic filter and it is rated 800x1 at 14.4
volts...
but for 300 u could get the kicker 800.2 which HAS s sub-sonic filter
as well as remote bass bost, and is rated at 13.8 volts whick is what
most cars run at idle...that kicker is a badass amp...id take it over
the mtx and JBL anyday, they are one of the coolest runing class d amps
u can get...WELL worth the extra money...
as for components...i have JL's bottom line TR series speakers and i
LOVE them...so anything by JL, Focal, kicker...along those lines...

thanks a lot. is that kicker 800.2 still single 4 ohm wired at 2 ohms?
i'll look into those JL components. would i need any of the kits to
make my trunk not rattle? i drive a 93 nissan 240sx and i was planning
on having the seats folded down when i have the music up/when the back
isn't occupied.

that 800.2 is 1 ohm stable...so u could go either dual or single
then...i perfer dual for more wiring options...
only way to find out about rattles is to try :D ....
