View Full Version : Headunit brand?

Hi,

It has been a number of years since I was into car audio. Now, I am looking
for a decent headunit. When I last followed the industry, Alpine, Kenwood,
and Eclipse seemed to make good headunits.

What manufacturers are currently producing the best quality units? I am
primarily interested in CD and FM performance. I care more about sound
quality than features.

Thanks in advance,

Rock

Pioneer Premier is the only other brand I'd look at personally unless you
want an ultra high-end unit like a Nakamichi or a Denon.

The Alpine, Kenwood, and Eclipse decks are still at the top of a long list.
The FM performance in many Alpine units is lacking, but is very good in
Eclipse and Kenwood units. If strong FM performance is a priority, I'd
probably go with the Eclipse out of those you list.

I am personally a Alpine user and love thier Head Units. I am running
the CDA-7894.

I have owned many brands, but I have run Eclipse for nearly 10 years. I
haven't owned a Nak or a Denon.

I'd be surprised if you got fewer than 5 different answers here. Pioneer,
Alpine, Blaupunkt, and Eclipse all make great decks. Nak makes a great sounding
unit, but unreliable and overpriced IMHO. Denon's DCT-Z1 is great too, but it's
expensive. You could have the DEX-P9/DEQ-P9 package for not much more and get a
lot more flexibility. Frankly, I don't see the point. My Eclipse (CD8443)
retails for under $500, has a 24-bit D/A converter, and sound quality and noise
supression to rival any of them. Blaupunkt and Pioneer are going to give you
more features for the same money though.

Rule of thumb... if Eddie said it, it's probably a joke. Every once in a
while he's serious though.
