View Full Version : PPI 2150AM question

I have an old precision power 2150 that I am going to use for 1 8" sub. the
sub has dual voice coils (4ohm).
I no longer have the specs/manual for this amp since I bought it about 8-9
years ago. It has seen little use and I thought it was fried so it sat in
my basement for the past year but when I applied voltage to it, it powered
up. I havent tested further yet, so I'm hoping it's ok still.
Anyway: does anyone know if the amp can run bridged into 2ohm load?
thanks

I dont think those were stable into a bridged 20 ohm load. Only the
ProMos series amps of that era were.

dig dug,

The PPI M an AM series amplifiers required an external bridging module so
that they could operate "bridged". Beginning with the ART series
amplifiers, PPI modified the internal circuitry of their amplifiers so that
an external bridging module was not needed. I would also like to point out
that none of the PPI amplifier models M, AM, ART and Powerclass were
designed to drive a 2 Ohm bridged load. They will do it though, for a
while.

This amplifier is a really great amp, so don't throw it away if it does need
repair. There are people that can still fix this guys.

Since you are trying to make this amp run "mono", why not use a Y-splitter
RCA cable and drive the L and R inputs with the same signal? Then wire the
left channel to one voice coil and the right channel to the other voice
coil. Just make sure you get the phase right on your coil connections. If
they are out of phase, you will not be able to hear much sound coming from
the speaker. Not quite the same as running bridged, but the amp will be
much happier. Your maximum output power to the speaker will be about 600
Watts. Make sure the speaker is rated for this power level.

The M and AM series were internally bridgeable. The series prior
required the external bridging module. Those did not use mosfets in
the power supply rather they used bipolars, actually they were the same
semis used in the output stage...oops going off topic. Your 2150AM
would run @ 4 ohms mono fine(600Watts), but don't try to go
lower[flame] . The AM series would actually shut off with a 1.5 ohm or
lower(stereo) load and the low imedance light would illumunate. To
connect a mono load use the Left + and Right - speaker leads. I have
plenty of these harnesses available if someone needs some.

Today I got a PPI-2200AM, but I didn't know that it's not bridgeable
before I bougth it.
Is it possible to build the external bridging module myself? The left
+ and the right - speaker leads doesn't deliver a mono output.
I looked inside the amp an it seems like it's an 4-channel-amp bridged
to two channels, isn't it?
How much Power delivers the amp into 4Ohms (mono)?

Thanks for Your answers!

The 2200AM is basically 2 2-channel amps in one chassis. Each amp is
bridged already. This amp will put out the following wattage:
2x200 @ 4 ohms
2x400 @ 2 ohms

You were correct about this is being basically a 4 channel amp. I have
a ProMOS-425 and on the board it says "2200" so I believe they used the
same main boards and for the 4 channel ProMOS amps, they built a small
daughter board for the pre-amp. You could probably make yours a 4
channel, but not a 1 channel mono.

Sorry for the bad news....

Lemme know if you want to sell the 2200, I might know someone
interested.

Hi, I have a 2150AM still in the box with the manual. According to th
manual it does have "internal bridging capabilities." The manua
indicates the GRAY to the R+ and the GREEN/BLACK to the L- for bridge
to a single speaker.
Feel free to email me if you have any questions regarding the manual.
I bought mine at a car show but never installed it.

Iīm not sure but i think my amp doesnīt run correct. I took the left

That amp is easy to bridge. You use the Left+ and Right - Colors
should be Green & Gray w/black stripe. Here is a PDF to illustrate:
