View Full Version : JL Audio 12W6 V1s???

Anyone have the 12W6V1s???
I have a 2DR, 2000 Chevy S-10 Blazer that I have three of them in, in a
sealed enclosure with about 1.0+ cubic feet or airspace per sub.
I'm powering them with a Hifonics Zeus and they should be getting about 1200
or so watts... The box is built out of 3/4" MDF, and is sealed very well.
So far I'm not happy with the output, they just don't seem to be putting out
enough...
One the plus side, I can turn them about 95% of the way up and they don't
pop, bottom or distort. They sound cleaner than some of the other subs I
have had, but I was expecting a lot more volume with 3 12s... Any
thoughts...
Please NO flames and I don't want to debate about which brand is best. I
already have these and can't really afford to buy another set of whatever is
popular this year...

How loud is it? If you're looking for mid-150's then yes, you'll be
disappointed. If you want them louder, try them in a ported box.

Is that 1 cuft of airspace net volume or before installing the sub?

Is it the volume in general or just the really low frequency that is
suffering? I am thinking that 1.25 - 1.5 cuft would be a better target for
enclosure volume, have you used polyfill at all?

Nope I verified last night.. I thought it might be possible, but I followed
the wiring diagram off JLs website and went back and checked again..
Also, its not a good way to tell, but I looked at the subs and watched them
all move the same way when I pushed them pretty hard...

I don't know what its hittin. I guess I should get a meter on it and see
what it hits... I'd like to know... I'm afraid I'll be more disapointed..

Yes, its about 1.0- 1.1 per sub before the sub goes in... I thought that
when a manufacture gave specs for recomended airspace they already figured
in the sub... By your question, I assume thats a misconception on my part.
Its pretty much the volume in general... It seems like it plays everything
well, just not as loud as I'd hoped...
I was thinking that 1.25 -1.50 per sub would have been better too, but I was
running outta space and on the subs documentation, JL had 3 enclosure types
listed, they had one that was 1.0 cu feet and they called it the ""SPL
Monster"" box (yea right) (only if SPL ment Speaker Produces Less)...
If I get some time and money this weekend, I may try some fiberfill. I
don't realy hae the time or money to redo the whole thing... I can post
pics if anyone is interested... Its not all that, but I guess its not bad
for an amateurs 1st shot at making a pretty box..
Thanks to all that posted comments or suggestions...

Connect them to a 9volt battery and make sure. I have seen instances where
the voice coils were mismarked from the factory.

The enclosure recommendations do not account for the displacement of the
sub. Make the box larger or go ported and you'll be happy.

That is a misconception on your part ... it does mention in the specs that
the volume they recommend is the NET volume (still, they should just give
the real numbers and save headaches)

I had an idea while I wasn't thinking about your problem at all :-)
What do you have the crossover point set at?

Typically in a sealed enclosure output and power handling will increase as
the volume decreases, at the same time you are trading off low frequency
extension.

Definately stuff a pound of fiberfill in each airspace.
I would be interested in pics, perhaps there is an easy way to increase the
volume of the enclosures without building a new box.

Daniel,
I still need to get some fiberfill and give that a try... Hope that will
gain some more volume.
I can't remember what my crossover point is as I was fooling with it and
kind of tuned it by ear... I'll look at it tonight when I gt home from work
and reply then with the setting..
As for pics, If you are on Dial up, I'll warn ya... All the pics I have are
pretty high res...
Heres one of the enclosure itself
http://www.teamxratedstl.com/membersrides/stlouismo/chevys10blazer/tempsubbox/DSC02119.JPG
heres one with the top on and almost done
http://www.teamxratedstl.com/membersrides/stlouismo/chevys10blazer/tempsubbox/DSC02126.JPG
Here is a crap load of other pics in various stages.... Its basicly a 4
chambered box, one big chamber for the three subs, one medium for my extra
optima batteries, 1 small on either side of the batteries for power
inverter, video switcher, etc...
http://www.teamxratedstl.com/membersrides/stlouismo/chevys10blazer/tempsubbox/
Looking back on the design, I do realize, I should have built the box
bigger, but I would have lost room for other stuff (extra Batteries, video
source selector, power inverter and crap). I was building this to house all
my other crap and look nice too. I figured, it was gonna be big enough or I
would re-designed it from the start....
I'll be the 1st to admit, I'm not a pro and its my 1st real box I have built
and upholsted... All my other systems I had installed, but I decided I
wanted to learn how to do alot of this myself...

I kind of figured that, but building a bigger enclosure is not really an
option at this point... Maybe sometime next year or something...

I am mightily impressed ... that looks really good. I have a solution that
you may be interested in (now that I have seen the pics)
Invert the subs (magnet outside the box) If you take the time you can make
it look really tidy even with all the speaker wire running around outside
the box. Heck ... just try it to compare the output to your current setup
.... remember, reverse the polarity when you invert.

Thanks for the Compliments...
You know that might be a good idea ... It deffinitly sounds like it is...
if I get time this weekend (I'm outta town Friday and Satuarday) I will try
it. I'll also, put in a few pounds of fiber fill... I'll prolly take a few
pics too... I'll post them and let you know how it turns out...
Thanks again for the help
