View Full Version : Character Limit for MP3 filenames?

I ordered an Alpine 9811 CD/MP3 player today. I'd like to start burning
MP3 dics before it arrives, becaus the process is going to take forever
to finish. My question is this: Is there a limit to the number of
characters I can use in an MP3 filename?
Will the player recognize something like this: "04 - NOFX - We Threw
Gasoline on the Fire and Now We Have Stumps for Arms and No
Eyebrows.mp3"
Or will it have to be shchanged to a lesser character format like "01 -
NOFX - We Threw G.mp3"?
Thanks.

Not sure on that model, but some other brands have limits of 19 Characters.

You can make the filename as long as you like and it will play it, but it
will only sort the files in each directory based on the first 8
characters, so keep that in mind while naming. It will also only display
the first 8 characters if you have the display set to "filename", and the
last couple characters of those 8 will be munged (e.g. 04NOFXW~1). If
you have the display set to "Tag", it will display the Songname, Artist,
and Album fields from the id3 version 1 tags if they are present, up to
30 characters each. I don't know the 9811 - I'm assuming it has the
ability to display tags.

Depends on the filesystems that your player can read. The different systems
(ISO, Joliet, Romeo etc etc) have different abilities. Joliet/Romeo seem to
be the best, whereas i think ISO only allows 8.3 characters or something
daft.

I have the 9811 and I'm not sure if there's a limit, but it will scroll
long file names across the display and then stop on the first 8 letters.
