You need to localize the problem. Can you try plugging in other
inputs to see if it is just one input bad, or all inputs? Next,
try connecting another amp or tape deck to the line outputs (the
record out, or pre-amp out if it has one) and see if you get
normal signal. If so, verify that all inputs work and the tuner
is OK. Once you get this far, post back with your results.

As stated, your problem could be anything.

Is it dead regardless of what inputs you have selected?
Phonon/tape/cd/am/fm? That can help isolate.

If you're not blowing fuses and are hearing something out, the main
power amp power transistors are probably is okay. My gut reaction is
that it's likely far more trouble than it's worth unless you want to
attempt to fix it and don't have any hobbies that are more satisfying
where you can spend your time (said the man with an EE degree).

Best Regards,

I have a Realistic STA-860 that recently quit working. I can hear a faint
signal thru the speakers when the volume is turned up all the way. Any
suggestions what went bad? I like to repair things myself so I would
appreciate any help in diagnosing the problem.

My gut feeling is that something switched wrong. I know it's perhaps
condescending to say, but have you checked *all* of the switch settings?
Especially check the speaker and tape monitor switches. It's easy to lose
the forest amongst all those trees.

Then try the things which John suggested...good advice.
