Head unit choice for Audi ?

I have an Audi A4 1998.
Although the wiring loom is in for a 6 disc changer the head unit is only a
Gala (no CD control).

So the choices are buy a new head unit and changer from Audi (expensive)
or
Replace the head unit with an MP3 type unit.

What do you recommend ????? £200-£300 ish including wife tax!

Red display, MP3, speed adjust volume, OEM dash display connector
