View Full Version : My friend went to Best Buy and bought a Sony Xplod amp...

....I am under the impression that Xplod products are damn near universally
reviled around these parts,

He picked up 2 RockFos 200W 12" subs...

And to run them picked up a Sony Xplod 400Wx1 @ 2

My question is...would he have been better off getting a RockFos 300Wx1 @ 2
(for about the same price if I recall)?

Or a JBL 300Wx1 @ 2 (for about $40 or $50 U.S. more than the Xplod)?

"Pay more for 100 less watts??" he says...hmm...

The only other brands they had were Pioneer, Kenwood and Lightning
Audio...which I assume would be out of the running...

Please try and restrict your suggestions to the Best Buy-available models
above...trying to tell him about a great obscure amp on the Internet
(although no doubt good advice), would fall on his deaf ears...

Not to mention his install appointment will be coming up soon so any and all
replies would be appreciated!

Not true. Sony has taken a dive lately (like many manufacturers) in an
effort to maintain/recover market share in a increasingly competitive
business. However, like any equipment you might buy, the install is the most
important factor.

No.

Same as above.

Not out of the running. I don't know anything about Lightning Audio, but
Pioneer, Kenwood, Sony, JBL, and RF are all comparable. That being said,
each of those companies makes a variety of products of varied quality. For
example ... it is not fair to compare the RF FNP2614 to the Pioneer TS-C604.
I have included links at the end of this post so you can see what I am
referring to.

You have not mentioned any other aspect of the stereo system in this car, so
I will assume that the subs are the only item (besides perhaps a head unit)
that are not factory. If that is in fact the case, I would think the two 12s
running off the Xplod amp will be more then satisfactory.

Personally, I do not like the BBY amps we carry, especially the Sony's. I find they will go into thermal and overcurrent modes frequently for no reason what so ever. Sure they give you alot of power for the buck, but not worth it. Kenwoods are decent, a step above the Sony's, but still somewhat bad under heavy play. Rockfords, usually perform very well under heavier loads (if connected subs are wired properly). But if possible, I would say go with a MTX amp from Circuit or Alpine.

It's not for no reason. Sony amps have *very* aggressive protection circuits.

The local Best Buy here advises people to visit www.crutchfield.com.
Best Buy's inventory is so spotty that you'll never find more than half
of what you're looking for.

Best Buy only sells Rockford's low end stuff. None of the Power Series amps,
and none of their decks either.
