View Full Version : Do I really need a sub?
tnfan77
September 21st 03, 03:06 AM
Im new to car audio, and im not sure if I really even need a sub. I
listen to classic rock, a little modern rock, and a tiny bit of
rap/hip-hop whatever you want to call it. If I do get a sub and amp,
Im not going to need a lot of power (at least I dont think I will :) .
Im going for more sq over spl. So what do you guys think? If need be,
my budget would be about 300 dollars. Thanks alot.

Good luck with that budget... I like my subs... I listen to mostly metal so
i have an unported cab with two 12" subs and a 425 watt amp... I dont have
them up too high because it drowns out all of the other music...Its up to
you though... Try getting some nice interior speakers first and see how you
like it...

September 21st 03, 05:09 AM
i think i was in the same boat you where my friend, i liked my music
nice and clear, didint need alot of bass and had a budget to work with.
then i got my stereo with (2) 6.5" subs in it, thought it was killer. 2
weeks later, after adjusting to this new killer bass ! i craved more..
then i exchanged the stereo for the model with (2) 8" subs, thought
that was amazing, then i got used to that bass, craved more, then i
bought a piar of 10's for my system, now im selling those for a pair of
15's... i personaly find audio adicting once you get into it, always
craving more. i mostly just crave more bass... but i think youd be best
off just setting up decent system with no subs for now, once you start
wanting more bass in the future, consider a sub or 2 or 6 then. dont
waste your money on something your gonna out grow fast. just save up
for a while and buy something good. youll be much better off that way.

you should look for possibly a single 10 or 12 with a 200 to 300 watt amp.
just a suggestion...

Hey, what's goin' on
Well, I have 2 Crystal CMPx2 15's. 1600wrms, 28mm xcursion each way,
good cone area, good low frequency extension, and really good sound
quality.
I'm currently breaking them in in my house with a Bass Mekanik cd, and
damm, it vibrates, resonates, shakes, and moves everything in my house
with only about 25-30 watts. I'm worried about giving it more wattage
right now bcuz of my neighbors. And that is just ONE hooked up.
Some good 15's?
Here's a list of a few, most are SPL subs, but some make good Sound
Quality subs too:
Treo SSX15.22
Treo CSX15.22
Adire Brahma 15
Crystal CMPx2 15 [metal] mine,lol
Cerwin Vega Stroker 15
Beyond Audio INHUMAN 15
Shocker Audio 15
Resonant Engineering xxx 15
Resonant Engineering hc 15
Resonant Engineering se 15
MMATS Juggernaut 15
MTX t9515
Earthquake Magma 15
Orion H2 15
Orion HCCA 15
Kicker L7 Solobaric (No SQ)
Massive Audio DMX 15
Digital Designs 9515
There are more, but believe me if I missed any other members will sure
let me hear it with replies with others, lol.
Hopefully I've helped some[fro]

IMO this question is answered with a question.. how much do you like to feel
kick drum beats? personally, being me, I love feeling the individual kicks
on the fast parts of "one" by metallica, or any other kick drums for that
matter... being able to hear the bass guitar clearly is also a big plus too
me. and yes I like classic rock, I have cd after cd of it, along with
heavy rock, rap, hip hop, techno, ect

tnfan77:
Yeah get a couple subs and a decent amp. I would with 8" subs they fire
faster and have a tighter hit than the bigger subs. A sealed unported box
would be a good start too. I would say check EBAY and you can find subs,
amps and boxes there. you might exceed your budget but not by much...
stick with name brands. MTX, Pioneer,Kenwood, ETC.. my plan for you would
be 2 8" mtx subs and a MTX amp . Amp ratings are funny max output isn't
always good. that is the peak ppower under ideal circumstances. I would go
with an amp of a rating of about or around 75-100 watts per channel.... the
8000 series subs are excellent but may be a bit pricey. try finding maybe a
6000 series. A combintation of 100 watts per channel and 2 8" subs in a
sealed box will produce the hit and feel of abass drum for the quality your
looking for....
Good luck

I was like you once ;)
About a year ago I got my first subwoofer, An Alpine Type-E 12". I just
wanted to add a little bass to my music. It was powered by an Alpine
MRD-M300 150W amp. When I first got it, I thought it was acoustic bliss.
Finally, I could hear parts of my music that I never could.
Well, it's 1 year later. I've been through 3 different subwoofers total
(The Type-E, an Alpine 12" Type-R, and a JL Audio 12W6v2) and 2 amps
(Alpine MRD-M300, Alpine MRD-M500). I have at home waiting to install a
new JL Audio 12W7 and Alpine MRD-M1000 amplifier. That's 4 subs in about
a year. Not to mention 2 head units, 2 sets of component speakers, 2
more amplifiers for component speakers, XM Tuner, CD Changer, etc....
All for a total of around $5K.
This is one of the most addictive hobbies around.

You should get 1 10 or 12 inch Infinity Perfect. There great sq subs.
And then you should get an Alpine amp.
