View Full Version : Best powered subwoofer choice for a dorm room?

TheGnome
September 24th 04, 04:40 PM
Hey -

I'm setting up a little stereo for my dorm room, and I have everything
picked out...except for the subwoofer. My background in audio is
mostly in the car, where I have a really nice system that I'm happy
with. However, that system stays parked 90% of the time, where now it
does me no good :)

So, I need recommendations for a small powered sub that would be good
in a dorm room. Needs to be able to have some serious output on
occansion, and have good SQ. Budget is under $500...firm. Subs I'm
thinking about, to give you an idea of where I'm at:

Adire Rava (seems like the most for the money)
Aperion S-8 (although frankly I have doubts over the output from a
single 8")

any others? please, I'm stuck here :D

thanks in advance.

Anything from Adire is going to deliver what they claim, they have some of
the most honest ratings for their products you will find.

Prepare to be hated by everyone else in your building. A
sub-woofer in a concrete and steel building will carry the
thumping noise throughout the entire structure, annoying
everyone who lives there. How about turning the bass down,
keeping your friendships alive, and worry about the boom-
booms until you have a place of your own after school.

You could always park your car in your dorm room. ;=>

But, seriously, I second the advice of the other poster about just forgetting
it to keep the neighbors from coming after you. Until you have your own
walls that don't touch your neighbor's walls, a subwoofer is just a bad
idea.

All kids are assholes. Some of us grow out of it.

You have to remember, this guy is in a dorm room, most likely already
surrounded by subwoofers in other dorm rooms. Generally kids don't mind the
noise from neighbors. I work at on a college campus and when I go to the
dorms, there is ALWAYS loud music playing. There doesn't seem to be any
trouble caused by it, because the other kids don't mind.

Somebody hand this man a...wait, nevermind...:) At least I can tell my
neighbors that *my* bass has good SQ, vs. their little 6.5" "computer"
woofers that boom at 40Hz!

At this point, I might go DIY with a high excursion 8" or the
Rava...that's a lot of woofer and amp for the price. I don't have any
money for this project yet (spent it all on the other parts of the
system), so right now it's all...well...academic.

Thanks for the advice though.

2x JBL NorthRidge E250P. That should be MORE than enough for your dorm
room!

Just make sure itsd weather resistant , because nothing will get you kicked
out of a dorm like a decent sub.
I would just recomend a decent paie of phones, like senhieser or something,
and dream of graduation

I'd agree with that recommendation, regardless of whether or not he gets a
sub. Plus, make them sealed back, circumaural headphones. Not only will it
keep the sound in better, it keeps other folks sound out, a real plus in a
college environment!

subwoofers should be banned, in "dorm rooms"

My thoughts also. My recommendation:

Headphones

I like the Grado SR80 for $95, but there are many other good choices.
You can enjoy the loud bass when you're in your car.

You could use that $500 to pay for books, tuition, travel, grad
school, seminars elsewhere, and anything else that you would enjoy and
would contribute to your education. Or save that $500 and start a fund
for a down payment to buy a home after you graduate.

I'd also suggest you not buy pricey audio gear for a dorm room. Way to
easy to steal it. Also, if you don't have it already, talk to some
insurance agents and make sure you're properly insured for your audio
and electronics gear in car and dorm room (renter's insurance would
probably work, but ask some agents). Should be very cheap to insure.
College campuses often have quite a lot of theft, so get insurance and
protect yourself.

Guess I sound like a parent...and that's what I am! ;-)

Hey, us parents have to stick together. And you're not going anywhere
until you eat your vegetables.

Ask her if she's heard this one:
We childproofed our home, but the kids keeping getting in anyway. ;-)

Try the Hsu STF-1. It has a list price of $300 and manages
to surpass the performance of several considerably more
expensive other subs I have previously auditioned. It also
has an 8-inch driver (but what a driver!), and it is not a
space-consuming design. I review it, along with the
company's interesting Ventriloquist surround-speaker package
in the current issue (number 101) of The Sensible Sound.

Enjoyed that review and the comparisons of the Hsu sub to other makes
and models. The speakers and sub were also reviewed in Sound & Vision
recently, BTW.

However, I'd still recommend headphones, not a sub, for a dorm room.

I agree. Also, it costs a lot less than a speaker-centered
system. Save the money for buying books and paying tuition,
and of course for food, and then enjoy super-duper audio
systems later on, after getting a good job and nice house.

Also, when I think about cramming in an HT speaker set, with speakers
in all corners of a room I imagine is pretty tiny, it seems like a
pretty ridiculous idea. As a parent, makes me think it's time for the
kid to get back to the books and schoolwork.

Agree, of course.

And that'll be an educational experience too, when the bills start
rolling in and some college kid starts to realize how many years he'll
be in debt.
