I am a newb when it comes to car speakers and I have been shopping
around to get speakers, but I have run into a problem. I have a 92
civic 4dr sedan and best buy told me I have 5 1/4 in. speakers and
circuit city told me I have 6 1\2 in. speakers. If any one can fill me
in on how to measure speakers it would be a great help thanks.

You do have a 6.5" speaker in your car, but getting a good one to fit will
be a problem because of depth which is why the 5.25" speakers were
recommended. I would look for a 5.25" speaker you like and go with that,
you'll have more options.

The rears are 6x9 in most Civics but there is a chassis cutout for 6.5
inch speakers too.
The best thing to do is to stick your head in the trunk and take a look.

You might also want to consider kickpanel mounted pods. Crutchfield
sells them for the civic I think. That would open up some more speaker
options, the install would be easier than modifying a door panel (IMHO),
and IMHO it would present better imaging and soundstage.

Those kickpanel mounts are $150 (on sale from $200) and they have almost
no enclosure volume. They might be OK for mounting a midrange and a
tweeter, if you're willing to pay so much money for a cheap piece of
molded plastic.

True... theres NO enclosure volume in those things. So they are for
mids/highs only. Many use kick panel pods for mids/tweeters and install
a midbass in the door for more bottom. It places tones above ~400 Hz at
the kick panels for improved imaging.
I think lots of people line them with fiberglass resin to reinforce
them.
I agree they are overpriced. If I had the room I'd fab my own. Lots of
Fiberglass / resin DIY articles on the tempro.com forum. You might be
able to find them used or discounted on E-bay.
As others have said, watch out for the depth. The speaker magnet needs
to clear the window mechanics. Crutchfield has pretty good
compatability archives on-line.
I think Lanzar markets Neodymium magnet driven separates. They have
very shallow mounting depth.
If you decide to modify the doors, be careful with the rain water
shields in the doors. They are there to help keep water off the door
panels and help protect the speakers. In 91' I had to replace a very
expensive 3-way infinity set (anyone remember the Emit ribbon tweeters?)
because of water damage.
Dont want this to happen to you...

you're right. Lanzar offers the Neo line of speakers with neodymium magnets
on the woofers. I've sold many pairs of the 6.1's (6.5" coaxes) and noted
that the speaker sitting on a table magnet down is no taller in moutning
depth (actually less than a) AA battery....VERY shallow. the quality is
excellent, and everybody seems quite pleased about the SQ...
