I have a Kenwood KDC-7009 CD player in my car that is malfunctioning.
It has power and sound, but I am unable to use any of the unit's
buttons. The display backlight comes on without any other display. I
have already tried removing the the cables from the back of the unit
and plugging them back in to no avail.
Does anyone know how I might fix this? Or should I just suck it up
and get a new unit?

The 7009 is essentially similar to the 8009, which I have. You have
the flip faceplate, right? Sounds like you might have a ribbon cable
problem or mechanical contact problem from the unit to the display....
I believe that cable is replaceable. Check it out.
If you are getting sound, that probably rules out the security code
system. Good luck.

I was wondering if you (Scott) decided that was the fix for this. This
EXACT thing happened to my KDC-7009 yesterday. At first, it was taking
maybe 5 seconds before it locked up. I was able to get my cd out and
put it on a decent station and lower the volume (after several turn
off's and on's). Now the display won't come on at all, but it still
plays the radio.
Is that cable ribbon you're talking about an easy fix? Is it something
a "non-certified-Kenwood-repairperson" could do? Thanks.
