View Full Version : Shopping for a sub

Hi,
I read dozen of posts on subs brand, and I am more and more confused.
I have an amplifier JBL300.1, and I want to add a sub to it and I am
NOT looking for something very boomy. I am thinking buying a 12"
300Watts RMS and a sealed enclosure. I mostly listen to soft rock and
rap, and I like it loud.
I think I have to choose the sub first and then choose the enclosure
according to what is recommanded, but correct me if I am wrong. Now,
the 1000$ question: how should I proceed for choosing the best brand
for me. All the salesmen I saw thought their brand was the best, of
course. I would like to remain under 175-200 USD. I heard good thing
on MTX, Rockford Fosgate and ImageDynamics. Any others.
I read some posts that says that you've got to listen to it, but
listening in a store is nothing similar to the experience

Sounds like you already got the Kicker/fosgate/MTX magazine ad spew from
your local sales goons.
There are a lot of "smaller guys" out there out there with stellar
subwoofers in the under $200 range. Digital Designs, Adire audio,
Resonant
Engineering, Elemental Designs to name a few. IMHO you might want to
look into them as well as the big names. Although some are available
only via mail order through their official site. Whichever you choose,
take time to design the enclosure per the subs TS parameters. Very
important.
Search the www.tempro.com forum, this has been discussed many times
there before.
Are you sure you dont want some boom? you prefer loud rap, that usually
requires some dbs in the 35-80Hz range. Of course that all depends on
your definition of "loud"

Why not? Sure their bottom end is questionable, but most of their other
stuff is pretty decent. Same goes for pretty much every large speaker
maker.

Another brand to keep in mind is Diamond. Mostly known for their higher
end stuff, their bottom end is comparable to most mainstreet
manufacturers high end. The CM3 for example is at or below your price
range and is built extremely well and sounds great. In a properly built
box, almost anything will do what you want though.

If you like it loud, you may need more power than that.

Those are all fine. Assuming the subs you're looking at are all capable of
easily handling the amount of power you'll be delivering, you won't notice
much of a difference between the brands if at all. Be sure you know the
impedance you need.

Listening to subs in a store and trying to make an informed judgment from
that is a complete waste of time.
