View Full Version : Mitsubishi/Infinity Amp connections

I'm trying to either find a good line in option or replace my head unit
on my 01 Galant for a newer one with a aux. input and mp3 cd capabilities. I
found some head units that would suit my needs at Crutchfield but they said
I'd have to bypass my factory amp and run wires to underneath the passenger
seat.
That's not a good option for me. We have no car stereo store here (rural
Co) and I don't have the time or inclination to tackle it myself. It seems
silly that I can't use my factory amp with an aftermarket head unit. Isn't
there some kind of harness, adaptor, or at least information for connecting
an aftermarket head unit to the existing amp? Seems like two channels of
audio going from one component to another can't (or at least shouldn't) be
that different from one amp to another. Did Mitsubishi/Infinity
intentionally make this hard to do?
If I could just find a way to get aux input using the changer input on
my existing head unit I'd be happy enough. I have a HD-based MP3 player and
want to listen to that through my car stereo. I have a FM modulator but the
sound is pretty poor and it's a hassle (the player sounds great connected to
my home stereo, so it's the modulator introducing noise).
Is this impossible or so hard it's not worth it? Frustrating to say the
least. Any advise would be appreciated!

Try schoshe or walmart. I'm not sure I spelled scoche right (either time),
but when I got them on the phone, they knew what I was talking about (Jeep
with infinity "premium" system) and said that walmart should have the part
in regular stock. You will have to use the amp out put from the new head
unit though; the infinity amp takes a high level input.

Thanks, I do have a Wal-Mart, but nothing like the other place you mentioned
(either spelling). I'll have a look. I think I found a wiring harness online
too.

Just to clarify your statement "You will have to use the amp out put from
the new head unit though; the infinity amp takes a high level input." So if
I get a 50 W x4 (or whatever) amplified head unit, I should feed the
Infinity Amp a signal that's already amplified? That seems unusual. I was
expecting to have to use the Preamp outputs on the new head unit which are
not amplified (much).

Yes, since the infinity amp has high level inputs only, you'll use the
amplified output from the new HU. Iran into the same problem with my jeep
when I wanted to add an amp. I discovered then that the factory system had
no low-level inputs or outputs.
The stock radio puts out about 7 watts. Scosche (however you spell it) will
have a power rating on the LOC. Walmart will carry the scosche products.
Goole for car audio harnesses or something similar; you should find scosche
that way.
Also, check www.installer.com. Eddie is knowledgable about the specifics of
Chrysler's infinity factory systems.
