a friend of mine who has worked for many a prominent producer and
engineer in the bowels of the major LA studios reports looming chapter
11 for quite a number of facilities. Is it really that awful out there?
Billboard had an article last week about studios suffering but that
subscription was cancelled last year in the course of cutting expenses
so all i saw was the headline online and not the actual article.

So iz studio bidness especially fugly or just normally weird these daze?

I've been hearing horror stories with uncommon frequency, and several
with major players involved. Luckily some of us out here have managed to
keep a regular flow of work coming through the doors.

I was working in a fairly large studio in NYC which is currently operating
under Chapter 11, and asked the house engineer about it. He basically
shrugged, saying that they'd been under Chapter 11 for over a year now
and that it hasn't seemed to change anything from his perspective. It's
been six months since then and they are still in business and still fairly
well booked and still under Chapter 11.

It's tough out here now that the record biz has dropped off, but may
be worse at the music retailers. The Wherehouse closed a while back
and Tower is in Chapter 11.
At least it's 85 degrees so we can use all that newly aquired free
time to swat flies at Venice Beach.

Sorry, for us non-americans, what is Chapter 11? Is it like administration
in the UK?

Pete.

It's bankruptcy protection from creditors. Intended to let an individual or
business off the hook from debt temporarily while they restructure their debt
or business plan with the intention of managing a recovery. It prevents
crditors from suing for payment at the expense of the debtor's survival.
