How is the AT 4053a for recording acoustic instuments - guitar,
mandolin, etc.? Graph shows it is flatter than the 4051, especially in
the higher frequencies. I have never used either one. Currently have a
Josephsen C42, AT 4041 and Oktava MC 012. The reason I am considering
the AT 4053 is that I can get one delivered at $360-375, which seems
like a good price. I would also sell the 4041 if I get the 4053.

It's good, but it's no upgrade from the C42. The 4053 is definitely
cleaner off-axis than the 4051 is, and it'll be a bit more narrow than
the C42. It's certainly a very good deal for that price, and you will
find it a big step up from the 4041.

I realize it is not a step up from the C42, which is what I would buy
over the AT 4053 or 4051 if the price was not so good. In fact, I
could probably get pretty close to what I am paying for the 4053 or
4051 on the used market, which I could then use towards another C42.

Turns out I have access to a 4051 for the same price (did not know
this when I first posted), would it be more appropriate for close
micing acoustic instruments than the 4053?

Thanks.

Not really. I think the 4053 is definitely better sound all the way
around, compared with the 4051.
