View Full Version : MXL LDCs on Elec Guit (Harvey?)

I have a last minute session starting tomorrow on a large rock band
that includes two drummers and three guitarists plus bass. They want
to record a "live" session in the studio, complete with vocals through
a p.a.
The intent is to capture their sets and sound for a yet-to-be-chosen
replacement drummer to rehearse to (one or both of their drummers are
leaving). We will be using the current crew without the new guy there.
They want SM57s on their voices as that is what they are used to.
Obviously, this is not intended to be a release, but I still want to
do the best I can.
Between the drums and vocals, I will be running low on (or out of)
SM57s. I have the following LDCs available: two AT 4033a's. and one
each MXL 1006, MXLV67 and MXL V63M. I may need one of the AT4033s if
one of the guitaris decides to try his acoustic (in the din that will
be blaring).
One of the guitarists would be at home in a shred band. The other has
an Allman Brothers style and sound. The third guitarist uses a mostly
clean sound. All will be through 2 x 12"s.
Any experience using these mics as the sole mic on a guitar cab?
Thanks.

As I'm typing this, our 4x12 Marshall cab with Celestion Greenbacks is being
recorded in Studio A by my son Alex, using an MXL V67G.

Hey, Harvey. Would ya check either your studio email or
whatever bit bucket you use as a usenet posting address?

The session went well. I used the MXLV67 on the shred guy and the
MXLV63M on the Allman guy. The "clean" guitarist ended up as a no
show. Sound was good. I'll listen closer today or tomorrow.
The band told me why they sing through SM57s: they have been together
for a long time (20+ years) They have used all kinds of vocal mics
from SM58s to 'stage' condensor mics. They decided between thefts and
breakage and breaking in new sound men that they were going to use one
mic on everything for live work. That way, the "sound" was the
"sound." Plus, no brain work when one mic didn't work: plenty more
where that came from, grab another 57. I shoulda/coulda had them bring
the bar mics in, but I have seen and played with this band live and
some of the mics do indeed have 20+ years of bar smoke and beer on
'em.
Anyway, the recording went well and they're happy.
