View Full Version : Cab Simulators and Guitar Preamps

I am looking for an advice on cab simulators and similar devices that
would allow me to make use of my guitar amp for recording purposes
without having to mike it (I would prefer miking it, but since I live
in an apartment, that's not an option).
I owned POD 1.0, and didn't like how it sounded. After trying several
other digital amp emulators (ToneLab,POD XT, and similar), I thought
that it would perhaps be better (and cheaper for me) if I used one of
the amps that I have (Fender Bassman Reissue), and connect it to my
soundcard via a cab simulator like Hughes and Kettner's RedBox Pro.
I would be interested to hear other people's experiences with this
setup as well as to find out how would one go about doing it,
considering that Bassman doesn't have a Line Out. Would it be okay,
for instance, to plug in guitar into Bright Channel 1 and run a cable
from Channel 2 to RedBox Pro input.
Also, what other moderately priced devices would you recommend for
this purpose.
I have another amp (Marhsall JTM-60 (1x12" combo)), which has an
emulated speaker output, but I would prefer using Bassman if I could
get better results with it.
I have not had a chance to try Electro-Harmonix LPB 2ube preamp, and I
was wondering if that might be an alternative worth considering.
The bottom point is that, yes, I'm looking for that elusive tone,
which for my tastes somehow always comes down to using a decent tube
preamp/amp in the recording chain, yet, my budget is limited, and I
would want to try to make best use of the equipment I already have.
Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

I have a couple of mp3 examples of doing exactly that with a Palmer PDI-09
which is very similar to a Red Box except I think it sounds better. You do need
to put some type of speaker load on the amp if you want to record silently
though.

I might be wrong, but it seems it it would not be possible to record 59
Bassman Reissue (Combo) in "silent" mode since this amp does not have a
Master Volume. In other words, considering Bassman's features and design, it
seems that whatever goes into a cab/amp simulator box would have to be at
the same time audible, i.e. heard on Bassman's speakers. This rules out the
whole idea of using a cab simulator, at least in my case since I live in an
apartment building, and noise and loudness are serious considerations.
If this is true, I seem to be left to consider preamps/simulator boxes such
as a used H&K Tubeman, Electro-Harmonix LPB 2ube and similar, so I would
appreciate any comments on your experiences with similar devices.

Use a speaker attenuator such as the Hot Plate, Altair Attenuator or Scholz
Power Soak. You can drive the amp including the power tubes as hard as you want
and have it as loud or quiet in the room as you want.

No, not if you have the right silent speaker load on the Bassman(I don't mean
speaker). Just crank the amp as usual...there's 0db/15db/ & 30db of attenuation
on the Palmer PDI-09. It does work pretty well I think...obviously different
than sticking a mic on there but it's definitely a decent(IMO) alternative for
apartment recording.

Thanks to all of you who responded to my posting. I was wondering if someone
who is familiar with 59 Bassman Reissue amp could suggest a way to connect
this amp to a box such as Palmer PDI-09. Would it be okay, for instance, to
plug in guitar into Normal Channel 1 and run a cable from Channel 2 to
Palmer PDI-09 box without disconnecting Bassman's internal speakers.
