View Full Version : Need advice on multitrack editing software (PC)
Eric Lee Productions, Inc.

Folks,
I'm looking for recommendations on pro level, PC-based editing software that
handles true, multitrack record/playback (not just simultaneous stereo
"events"). What works for you?
I welcome your feedback.
Sincerely,

A number of people here use Adobe Audition for that purpose.

Actually, I think Pro Tools, Nuendo, Logic, or Digital Performer are the
ones people use most.

Why don't you read what he wrote... PC... Logic and Digital Performer are
mac-only.
Many use Pro Tools, Nuendo, Samplitude and Sequoia, some also use Vegas...
I can highly recommend Samplitude (and Sequoia if you've got the cash).

Magix Sequoia.... or Magix Samplitude I have been very happy with Sequoia
after about 2 months of use, you will find the mutiband dynamics very useful
for voice over work.

Cubase SX works pretty well for me. No matter what software you get you may
be also interested in getting a Universal Audio UAD-1 PCI card. It comes
with some very nice EQ's and compressors.
Best of luck!

Samplitude is a real blast ! It has so many features others don't : For
instance, you can actually apply effects to a single "object" in your
track, allowing you to change those effects several times along the song
without worrying about automation or a limited number of plug-ins...
That's what I find is a real advantage for Samplitude.
I don't think any other software has this feature.

I second the recommendation for Adobe Audition. Besides a
capable multi-track recorder/mixer and a powerful editor it
has a full suite of effects and mastering functions built in
which in number and quality are hard to beat with any single
product.
Limitations: no ASIO, no VST plugins other than via a DX
wrapper, rudimentary MIDI support with no editing.
Unusual built in: multi-chanel surround encoder with export
to WMA 9 six-channel, six mono .wav files, or a six channel
interleaved .wav file.

Samplitude is one of the few (the only one I know of) that actually
processes event or "object" effects correctly. Meaning, it only consumes
resources when there's actual audio at that point on the timeline. CD
Architect 5 (which is otherwise fantastic) has become pretty much useless to
me for actual "mastering" (which is why I bought it, though the burning is
flawless) because of this. Track #20's plugins are running full steam even
when playing back Track #1, which unless you're only using a few plugins on
a few tracks, and "optimized" ones at that, you'll choke out even the most
cutting edge machine. This is just bad programming. Of course you might have
overlaps or crossfades where one track's effects might have to run
concurrently with another but that could be programmed for. Just running
them all full blast at all times is ridiculous. But of course I grew up
programming when 48K was a lot of memory and you had to squeeze everything
you could out of your code.

While Audition can have different volume and pan settings for each clip,
the real time effects are track based (or have I missed something).
Cheers.

Just do the editing you need to do, and add the effects you want to add, in
edit view.

I'll third the recommendation for Adobe Audition, though I still
prefer the Cool Edit Pro moniker. AA just doesn't cut it for me as a
name. Another unusual built in: AA will handle any arbitrary sample
rate to 1 MHz!!

Adobe Audition is clearly very popular at a midprice level. If you're on a
tight budget, though, you can get some very good results with n-track studio,
which is under $100 (I think it was going for $69 but haven't kept up) and does
most of the things Audition does, albeit with a much clunkier and less
intuitive interface. On the other hand, in addition to Direct-X plugins, it
will do VST effects, which Audition basically won't.
Peace,
Paul

I was just working with a file that was composed of a 15 MHz sine wave
sampled at 100 MHz.

Or you can logically (but not physically) split the file and
have different segments of it on different tracks of the
mixer for the application of different effects. A tad more
cumbersome than different effects on the same track but not
a lot.

I've used that a lot for oversampled DSP research in
conjunction with Angelo Farina's Aurora DSP plugins for
Audition/CEP.

Why would you need a 100 MHz sampling rate to get a good sample of a 15 MHz sine
wave?

Just a demo. I was curious as to whether Audition could actually do this.

To make a point about how flexible Audition is.

I use a Behringer DDX3216 mixer live with ADAT module and ADA8000 8mic/line
to ADAT-ADAT to 8line extension.
I run these through a RME digiface into my laptop running Samplitude Pro.
24 track 48 KHz/24 recording without any problems for under $4000
I usually also run my Archos Jukebox recorder on the FOH mix for 2track
48KHz recordings (SP-DIF out from the Behringer..) on MP3/160kbps VBR

Besides a program like Samplitude Pro kicks major b*tt where live recording
is concerned IMO (and logic/DP/ProTools *ss as a matter of fact)
