View Full Version : Looking for good tracking cans .. Please advise!
Daniel
December 19th 03, 08:46 AM
Hi,
Would anyone please recommend good (as in "nautral" response) tracking
headphones that (1) fit completely over, and around, the ear, (2) aren't too
costly and (3) can be "driven" easily ? Problem with many of the "cans" I
see on sale today is that they're pretty small and rarely cover the ear. I
have the AKG 240M's and they're perfect BUT are of the open design. That's a
problem.
Thanks for your replies,
Daniel

I like the Sony 7509 (not 7506).

You might try the Sony MDR-V6 or 7506. Not even remotely neutral, but that
can be a good thing for tracking. The exaggerated top end makes it easy
to keep levels and therefore leakage down.

I seem to like the Sennheiser HD280Pro (i think that's the correct
name). They've got a nice amount of isolation, I think around 28db.
They're the best I've found for tracking loud instruments like drums.

Daniel,
The new K271 are closed back and are more efficient (lower impedance) than
the K240. They also have a microswitch in the headband that turns them off
when they are not being worn. That's nice for not blowing them up when you
forget you have them plugged in out in the studio and decide to crank up the
headphone amp to blow out the dust bunnies. Enjoy.

AKG 270s. Closed back, two driver, comfortable, get plenty of volume for
live tracking (although at the back of a big hall I can hear the delay
speakers somewhat), and although expensive, seem to sound much better to me
than the Sony cans. Nothing overhyped, just pretty natural sounding. I've
worn them for days in a row at 13 hour a day live recordings and I still
enjoy putting them on.
Other than that, I'd suggest the beyerdynamic DT770s. Again, closed back,
fairly good isolation, excellent in determining problems on solo and not
uncomfortable at all. I use the 270s on location recordings and the 770s at
my home studio.

How expensive?
Also, what's the difference between the Sony 7506
and the 7509 that someone mentioned?
I really like the isolation of the 7506s, and have for years found them really
durable. They are not at all neutral, but I find that they hyped top and
bottom let folks run a little less gain in them. Not much, but a little...

I wondered that myself, but ever since I looked at that link Klay
posted in a recent thread, my life has changed! I found reviews, list
prices, street prices and everything!
Harvey has some low-cost headphones he sells especially for
tracking. Looking on http://www.itrstudio.com I don't see a link to
them (why is that, Harvey? I thought part of having a business selling
stuff is promotin' the stuff you sell, on your very own website, of
all places...), but looking on his his prosoundweb forum, I found this
page:

AKG must be changing their line - the 270s can now be had all over the 'net
for @$120.00 - too bad I paid $200+ for mine a little over a year ago.

Ben,
I haven't got around to linking the MoreMe page, mainly cuz I'm lazy.
Kurt Foster did a review on the phones:
http://www.recording.org/e-mag/article_99.shtml
Bottom line:
They're cheap ($20), they're loud (105dB), and they're rugged (in a cheap sorta
way). They also have decent isolation.

I just orderd a set of the "delux more me" with an 20 foot extension...
Total OTD (out the door, includes shiping etc..) $42.
If these are "good enough" ill get another set.
Thanks!

BTW.. what sold me was this bit of text on the order page...
http://www.ITRstudio.com/moreme.html
"If you wanna try them for a while, the standard MoreMe's will cost ya $20
($30 for the "Studio Deluxe" models) plus $5 shipping. If you don't like
them, send them back within a month or so, and I'll refund your money.
"
Nothing like a no risk in studio trial!

They are bigger physically, more comfortable and to me they sound much less
midrangy. They seem to be able to handle drums and very loud stuff better too.

I've seen them for 99.99, I love mine.
I purchased mine a month or two before the price reduction. 219.00

Thanks Harvey,
Could you please tell me if these cans surround the entire (normal) ear or
do they just "sit" on the ear. I like something that goes completely over
the ear.

Daniel,
It's about 1" wider than the pads on a 7506, and about the same height. When
you put them on, none of the ear is visible, but I wouldn't say that it
"surrounds the entire ear".

It appears that my isp's mailserver has gotten itself blacklisted at
