Hi kids,
This is more of a ramble than anything else.
I was grooving on the MOTU 828 mkII and would get one in a flash were
I not concerned about Firewire compatibility issues and reports of bad
Tech Support. It's got lots of blinkin lights and knobs and seems
really cool. My guess is that a Firewire incompatibility would
manifest itself quickly so I could take it back if needed...
Then the Edirol UA 1000 USB2.0 device comes out and looks like it
could do most of what the MOTU does. Although since I have outboard
mic pre's I do not care about having 4 built in. Also 4 MIDI's is
overkill as I already have MIDISPORT 8x8 and can prob get by with 1x1
feeding it (I use the 8x8 as a patchbay/router).
Then there's Echo Layla 24, certainly no frills like blinkin lights
but to be honest I do all level monitoring in SONAR anyway, I would
not be using the device standalone.
Finally there is M-Audio Delta 1010 and I am somewhat partial to
M-Audio, using Delta 66 and AudioPhile 2496 for several years without
problems.
Last 2 devices need PCI card but I have a slot available and
portability is not a concern.
My intended host PC is new Shuttle XPC with P4 2.8 GHZ HT running XP
Pro. All of my existing Athlon's PCI functions are now built in to
the mobo.
My analog sources are 1 stereo hw synth, Alesis D4, Adrenalinn, a
couple mic pre's and Lexicon LXP-1 (mostly used for "comfort" reverb
while tracking).
S/PDIF sources are 2nd PC running GigaStudio, J-Station, and Boss VF-1
FX proc.
My goal is to toss my 24 in 4 buss Samson mixer because I never use EQ
and am a little tired of getting confused about what input is going to
what buss (buttons are hard to see if they are up or down). And I
have a growing case of GAS! All devices above are within budget.
Any comments welcome.
