View Full Version : Rode NTK - Do I need a shockmount...

Hi there,

I've been reading some great advice about microphones, including the Rode
NTK. Finally, I reckon that this mic sounds great for my needs and budget
(just!).

I was a little annoyed to find that I need to spend another £69.99 on the
shockmount! In the UK the NTK is around £327-£350, so this upps the outlay
to over £400. I get the impression this shockmount *is* needed (it is
advised in the tech specs, and also I hear it helps deal with bass issues
when recording). I'm recoding in a 'home studio' environment, and am quite
new to recording with anything other than an SM58. So, do I need a
shockmount!?

If so, does anyone know a good UK supplier who's doing a deal on the NTK at
the mo? Or, alternatively, can other shockmounts be used with the NTK?

Thanks in advance,

Tobes

You only need a shockmount for the NTK in circumstances where you would need
a shockmount ofr any other mic. It is usable with the default mount.

Hi Tobes.

Although this mic has internal shock mounting, it is not quite enough
for more serious recordings.

If, together they are slightly out of budget, I would suggest getting
the mic this month and the shock mount next month. Use the 30 day gap
to play around with / learn the mic.

So, when the shock mount arrives you will have a head-start on the mic
and can get down to laying something more serious than scratch vocals.

Thanks for the advice there Hassan (and also to Geoff for the other post!).
Actually, that sounds like good common sense. I was kinda worried I may
damage the mic trying to use it without the shockmount, but then I guess
that's a bit daft of me!
