Chak,
Are you kidding? That's wonderful news. Congratulations to both of you (but
more to Scott, since he got the better of the deal). So are you gonna change
your sig to (Chakaal, The Indiscriminate)"?

Something appropriate would be preferable to something inappropriate...

Congratulations! I hope for your and Scott's sake that this means he will
have less time to post to the group. I hope for the group's sake that it
doesn't. But your happiness is more important than ours, so the first hope

Appropriate/inappropriate... Such a difficult question...... *smiles*
What was Z!'s fault? Introducing you two or springing the wedding
announcement after the fact?
Going to borrow Doug's boat for the honeymoon and scare the

Well daggone. That's wonderful. Our congratulations. I guess now we'll
see what's really important in that garage! <g> Just remind yourself like
we do. If you haven't used it in 5 years, get rid of it! It's become our
mantra over the past couple of years and we still haven't gotten rid of all
the accumulated stuff, but you're already starting with someone else's full
garage! <g>
It truly couldn't happen to two finer people. Hope to see you both soon.

My dad's backyard neighbor ended up with a prefab shop building in his back
yard when he married. There've been photos published here of Scott's
garage. You'll need at least one.

We need:
Workshop for him - storage, prefereably built in shelving with many bins of
varying sizes.
Workshop for her - separated physically if only to keep down the sawdust...
Bird Room - full of light but well insulated and not drafty with a view on
the main living area. There is nothing that will make a parrot scream its
head off like feeling left out. Or two of them.
Studio for him - as far away from the bird room as possible...
Office for her - he doesn't used "computers" at hom anyway and is welcome
to keep his HP2626A in the studio for when he wants to check his email via 14.4
modem in a text only interface. *I* want DSL for my PowerBook...
Large kitchen with gas stove, at least one super hot burner so he can cook
in the wok. Double sink or dishwasher. Preferably both. Venting range hood
and several windows for when things go horribly wrong.
Family room or library, with view on the bird room so I can goof off online
or read a book without being tormented (See "Bird Room" above), with
attached small closet to be retrofitted into Projection Booth for 16mm/35mm
film dailies/preview/couch potato viewing.
Library for several thousand each books, CDs, LPs and Cassettes.
Three bedrooms.
Hot Tub.
At least two showers and one regular tub.
Gas hot water.
Gas boiler and radiators (preferably baseboard).
Birdworthy distance from our neighbors.
Don't ask for much, do we?

Sounds about right to me. You shooting for down there or up here or in
between?
And don't forget when you're looking, that a house might not be exactly like
you want it, but for a good price, it could be. And if it's up this way and
you want to do some remodeling work (after I get the patio finished next
spring) then you have someone who's pretty good from framing, wiring and
plumbing to finish carpentry and even cabinet building. I think,
particularly with the way housing costs are shooting sky high, that it's
reasonable to find a house the size you want with the type of yard and
location you want, and simply gut the thing and start over.
And I already know about the little feathered screamers, but parrots can get
neurotic without company, so a well placed aviary is definitely a
requirement. Mine isn't so much well placed since the birds can't see us
all over the house, but we travel through the aviary all the time, so they
don't feel quite so alone, and they have each other. The poor little
parakeet though, even as lonely as he may be, often sits and quietly
twitters to himself, which is usually a sign of contentment. Besides, I
don't want another 27 budgies, so I'm not getting him female companionship,
and another male would be stupid.
Back to the house. Look for one that still has an attached garage because
that can become another room like we did with ours. Same thing for screened
in porches because they usually have a decent enough foundation that they
can become rooms without a whole lot of hassles. A smaller type two or
three bedroom house with basement, attached garage and a screened in porch
or two (both of ours have been converted) can go from an 2000 sq ft house to
a 2800 sq ft house with a little planning and some elbow grease (hey, it's
an example, not that 2000 sq ft would work for you guys in the first place).
We added about 500 sq ft with the garage changeover alone, including the
upper floor within the roof's A frame. And if Scott is going to be using
saws and creating sawdust, spend the money for a nice outbuilding like a
really big shed. May cost a few thousand (my 10' X 14' was a little over
$2k but get a BIGGER one! <g>) and require running electrical to it, but
you'll be glad you did. Just don't let it turn into a storage shed! <g>
And always look for HIDDEN water damage.

Don't feel bad. After Bev and I got married (1988) it took until 1995 for
us to get around to our Hawaiian honeymoon. The week after we got married
Bev got to go to New Orleans (an IBM conference) and I got to stay home with
the pets. But, life doesn't suck all the time! <g>

And if Scott is going to be using

I'll be making the sawdust, but if I can borrow a nail gun...
Sadly, no basements in Williamsburg area, too close to the
water table. However, we'll figure something out!
>$2k but get a BIGGER one! <g>) and require running electrical to it, but

There may be nothing I can do about that. But I suspect that the continued
threat of sawdust, particularly sawdust and spackle dust will keep him from
putting anything in there. All I have to do is not finish the interior
until he's set in his ways enough at considering it a bad location!

That's pretty important, yeah. Not to mention termites.
