What's funny about it?
That's not much over what they are going for on eBay, and since his is in
mint condition, I would think it would be worth the few extra bucks.
If I didn't already have one, and was looking, I would probably be
interested.
But even above all of that. It is his gear, and he can ask whatever amount
he wants for it. It doesn't mean you have to buy it, or make smartassed
remarks.

Doesn't mean we're not allow to make smart-assed remarks either.
Considering the PCI host card means the 001 will be obselete in a year, and
the far superior 002R is selling for $999 new, I think he was exercising
restraint.

My point exactly, thank you.

At AES this year, a resolution was passed to removed all smart-assed people
from the recording engineering "profession." Our industry is to become as
stodgy as the people who sell the music.

That's okay by me. I think I look pretty good in a lab coat.

I'm sure that plenty of PCs will have a hole you can cram an
'obselete' PCI card in for years to come.

Likewise, many PCs do not have firewire so the 001 is attractive to a
lot of people.

Exactly.

If Apple wasn't too cheap to provide an adequate power supply with
their new G-5s, the card would still work fine.

Amazing how this stuff gets spun...

I thought I saw PCI slots in the new G5s!

I think the economics of the industry have taken care of this already.
You have to be a complete dumb-ass to even think of getting into
recording today.

PCI cards that require 5v do not work in the G5. The MOTU PCI-324 and
the Digi 001 card require this voltage, among others.

MIX and HD TDM cards work fine.

More details can be found at the very bottom of this page:

Well, it IS just a card and a cable. Can't Digidesign make a
replacement PCI card and cable so we can keep our Digi 001s instead of
****ing a lot of us off?

the 001 has been on the shelf for years, is now discontinued and has
essentially been replaced in Digi's product line by the 002 rack. it
doesn't really make much sense for them to do a replacement production
run of PCI cards for a (comparitively) small-ticket item that has been
discontinued. this is the world in which we live. products get
discontinued...this should be no great shock especially considering
the digital, computer-based nature of the product itself.

i'm a 001 owner and i feel that this little interface has had a good
run. please keep in mind that your 001 will continue to function in
your existing computer even though it is considered "oboslete" and
will also function just fine in the very last dual processor G4 that
was produced in the not so distant past which becomes more affordable
all the time.

it seems to me that if you have and are willing to drop the scratch on
a new G5, it wouldn't be much of a stretch to sell you 001 and put the
proceeds towards a 002 rack...or use the digi trade-in offer to do so
(whichever makes more economic sense at the time).

you can keep your 001. just don't try to use it in a G5.
