I'd love to know if anybody has specific recommendations for powered
monitors below $500, the budgeted amount I'm currently tied to. What
should I avoid? Thanks for your suggestions!! --Paul

I'm not a pro audio engineer, and there are lots of very good people with
lots of experience here, so take this advice for what it's worth.
I just bought a pair of Event 20/20 v2 for our studio. We record our band
doing neo-trad Irish music, as well as our own oddball stuff. We were using
an old pair of Alesis Ones, and with more than three or four instruments
things just sounded fuzzy. I auditioned the Mackies ($1400, the set that
everybody loves, label escapes me) against the Behringers ($400, some people
like them, most people hate them) and found that with a little eq adjustment
I could get the Behringers sounding like the Mackies pretty much.
We auditioned two other sets in our studio - important to do if you can. We
tried the Events against KRK v8s, both around $8oo for the pair. The KRKs
sounded better - warmer and fuller with a bit more bass, but the Events
sounded a bit more clinical, and we wanted them for monitoring and mixing.
We'll do our best at the mixes and panning and so on, then take all the
tracks on a hard drive to our local friendly PT equipped studio, rent it for
a day, and do the final mixes and mastering on a system equipped with
larger, fuller speakers, and the trained ears of an engineer who knows our
band well.
My opinion is that for the $500-$800 price range you'll get similar quality
but with subtle coloration differences, and a lot depends on your listening
area, which will greatly impact the speakers. The Behringers weren't bad.

Hi Carlos,
I have the KRK V8's and love them for their clarity and 'open' sound. I do
regularly use them with a Tannoy PS115 sub though. Regarding the $800 per
pair you mentioned, I normally see the V8's for $600 each. Were you
thinking of the V6's.

John:
I'll check with my friend who actually picked them up at G-Center, but I'm
fairly sure they were the v8's. I know for sure they had the 8" woofer,
and I know they were $800. They DID sound very good. I could easily have
lived with them. We use them for our Celtic music group. We SOMETIMES
incorporate and electric bass, and our percussionist almost exclusively
plays the cajone, that box-drum thingy. We don't have a lot of heavy bass
needs.

If they really are $800 per pair at that store please let me know! I've
thought about adding three more from time to time so I can create a surround
setup ( not that I really have room for it )
FYI - looking at Musician's Friend the V8's are $1200 per pair, the V6's are
$800 per pair and the V88's are $800 each.
Thanks!

I just checked my BSW catalogue, and by George - you're right, the KRK V8s
are $600 each. I'll have to talk to my bud. The monitors we looked at
WERE KRKs, and they WERE $850 for the pair, and they WERE 8" speakers. I'll
ask him and get back to you.

I found the KRK V series to have a VERY hyped top end. I wouldn't recommend
it for acoustic music. The M-Audio' BX-8 and their smaller speaker is also
a disaster (I just GAVE away a pair of SP5Bs).
The Event TRS6 have a very nicely balanced sound and a very detailed mid and
upper range and they sell for $400/pair.
I'd love to compare them to that Behringer Truth. I remember the Behringer
had a strong bass output, but I can't recall how the rest of the speaker
sounded.

I have the NHT A-10s which were a great deal at $439. This was a
closeout special last year so they may be gone by now.

Thanks for your suggestions. Will look into KRKv8s and maybe the Event 20/20s.
