Extract audio from avi file help

Hi,

I have some music video I put have in Media Studio 7 and I now wish to
add another instrument to it.

Is it best to play the avi clip and at the same time record it into my
audio program which I will have open at the same time, or actually use
audio program's 'extract audio from an avi' option ?

Is there an 'audio' difference in quality?
