I wonder if these archival inks are suitable/safe for printing labels on
discs?

Yes. It has a carrier for CDs. It also does general printing. It is slow.
The inkjet cartriges are small and expensive. Aftermarket cartridges are
about half the price of Epson. Printable CDs are a few pennies more than
non-printable. Ink costs plus the additional cost of printable CDs are
still a little less than purchasing labels; at least that was the case a few
months ago, when I ran some numbers. All in all I think it is a good
solution for quick onesey/twosey and out the door CDs. I just put together
ten identical proposal packages for a corporate committee including two CDs
and a DVD, which were custom prepared for the purpose. I was pleased with
the professional look vs. labels or hand-labeled marker.

I bought it at Office depot for $199.22 and they gave me a $40 Office Depot
card, there was a $50 mail in rebate from Epson for buying the printer, and
I bought two 30 packs of recordable CDR's for $39.88 and that gave me a $30
mail in rebate.

I haven't tried it with OS X, but it works fine under OS 9.2.2 and Windows
XP.

Does it have a separate cart for color, and for black, like our "old"
Epson 740?

BTW, Mike Rivers turned me on to Inkjets Southwest, which is a fine
supplier of "other" cartridges.

OK, heading down to Office Despot in the AM to see what their story is.

Best I found so far was $159 at Gateway plus a $30 rebate.


BUT....

Then I found the Stylus Photo 960 at ~$229 which prints much faster and
has individual cartridges for each color. IME the ink costs quickly
outweigh the purchase price on inkjets...

Yes, but the Stylus Photo 960 might be a better option since it has

Liquid ink costs outweigh the purchase of vintage Dom Perignon.

Your average ink jet ink is over $1,000 US per liter.

For older Macs (8 pin serial port) you have the Signature I and II
printers. I was told there are some thermal CD printers out there that
work with these, but I don't know what they are. I have a Signature I and
II that have earned their keep quite nicely.

Newer USB printers should work fine with the newer Macs, provided there
are drivers. The local Microcenter had the Epson that folks have talked
about. The sample at the store looks like it works fine.

I look forward to this. I've been using PageMaker for CD printing and
jewel case inserts for a while now. I get a new PowerBook that only boots
in OSX, and find out that Aldus is done developing PageMaker - no OSX
update, it has to run in Classic OS (9).

As an aside, I'm done with Epson and similar printers that use ink tanks
with one-board nozzles. I can't get an Epson Photo 820 to print right
after the nozzles clogged up. With printers like the HPs, you replace the
print heads when you replace the cartridges. We have a refurbished HP5550
- prints card stock jewel case inserts like a champ, and fast.

An associate of mine does a LOT of inkjet printing, mostly CD tray
inserts. Epsons were his favorite for most of the '90s but lately he
says Canon is holding up much better to the kind of abuse he puts them
through. No problems with bad nozzles, even after 10 years of use on
one Epson. His comment on the HP cartridges with builtin nozzles is
"that way they could patent the whole assembly, forcing you to buy
HP-branded replacement cartridges." I always thought the HP cartridges
were overpriced, now I know why.

High volume users will sometimes drill & tap the ink cartridges as soon
as the printer arrives, then route silicone tubing up to a frame holding
inverted ink bottles over the printer.

So what is the cost per CD? I know, it depends. But any ideas about
how many CDs you can do, say for a full colour print job? Or what about
more sparse---just some text and maybe a logo?

I often do smaller runs of concerts I record. I might make 10 to 50 CDs
for clients. I just do black and white laser printing on stick-on labels.

I am trying to figure out if it is worth it to move up to this.

The 900 isn't worth it for more than a small handful of discs at a
time. Any sort of quantity is just too much hassle to deal with. I gave
my 900 to the kids and bought a Bravo.

How does the ink stand up if it gets damp or wet? Is it colour fast or
does it smear or run?

Just have one ****ed off client whose label came off in the trunk mounted CD
changer and you won't wonder about that at all.
