Has anyone picked up a copy of "Neumann, the Microphone Company" yet?
Books about pro audio are uncommon enough (not counting the plethora
of "DAWs for Dummies" books that fill shelves at your local
superstore) that I'll probably just buy it. But at $50+, it would be
nice to know that it was well done. Did anybody page through it at
the Neumann booth at AES? (I'm guessing that they had a copy lying
around)

Yes, I have a copy here which I ordered direct from the German publisher;
let me get through this weekend alive and I'll post some kind of
description of the book.

A long time ago Neumann sent me a German booklet "Mikrophone,
Arbeitsweise und Aussfuehrungsbeispiele" (Microphones, How They Work
and Examples of Set-Ups") by Dr. Ing. Gerhart Bore; I still find it
great today.
If the author or one of authors of the "Neuman, the Microphone
Company" was Mr. Bore, it's well worth obtaining.

It's available from the german Neumann site. It has not been imported to the
US. It's a great history lesson of Neumann and Sennheiser.

That book is available for download as a .PDF in either German or English
on Neumann's Web site (see the "Infopool"--in English it's docu0002.pdf).
Or it can be requested as a printed booklet from Neumann USA or from the
Neumann representative in other countries; I believe it's available at
no charge or perhaps for one dollar or so. Agreed--it's excellent.
(Back in the 1970s when it was available only in German, I made my own
translation of the entire thing; only then did I find out that Stephen
Temmer of Gotham Audio was preparing an official English translation of
it. He borrowed my text for a while and I sometimes think perhaps that
I recognize a few of my own phrases in the English version that came out.
But I can never be certain, since I don't know what text he already had.)

No, the new book is primarily a review of the company's history and
products. It is undoubtedly a "public relations" book--but this is such
an important and interesting company in the history of recording, and the
book does offer material of technical interest, so that it is really of
wider interest than such a book would ordinarily be.
If one is already familiar with Neumann's product line and all the
material on www.neumann.com, much of the book will not seem so new.
A lot of material seems also to have been taken from past "anniversary"
publications by the company. But some historical subjects are covered
in far greater depth in the book than on the Web site, and the interviews
contain candid, topical comments--not all here is bland self-praise by
any means.
The book has its entire text in both German and English in one volume.
The quality of the translation is very good, though there are some rather
sad typographical errors in the English--one last layer of proofreading
in English would have served the publisher well. Otherwise it is a very
nicely made book; the graphic design is quite attractive, and there is a
wealth of well-chosen photos and illustrations.

Nevertheless I own a hardcopy, I'll going to get it from the Neumann's
site. Thank you a lot for this info!

Well, I see that I have made a mistake in translating the title. It
would be better if I translated the title "Microphones, How They Work
and Principles of Construction" . Doh, that happens often at me,
quicker at the keyboard than at the brains.
