Ive been listening to this song. Not so much the drums this time, but the
main riff. When the guitars first come in, what makes this mix so punchy? I
cant figure it out. bass compression maybe? tape saturation?

Really good rooms with really good players with pretty good hardware and very
good operators behind that hardware... and damn little compression in
comparison to what we do today.

Guitar overdubbs..Can't you hear all of them? More than one guitar sound (more
than one brand of amp) like Fletcher said, good players

So why does the snare sound like it was done at another time and another
place ?

And having a riff you've been playing since when you were in the Yardbirds
probably lends a bit of authority to Page's performance ("I'm Not Talking" -
Mose Allison).
