Does anyone have a copy of the Teac Dap20 DAT recorder manual or specs
or know where I can obtain them? Does it have internal preamps or is
that just a rumor? I'm at a loss to get any signal with my condensers
and I've tried every setting and every combination of settings on the
thing. Dynamic mics seem to work fine with it, and the recorder itself
appears to be in A1 condition. Appreciate any help. Thanks,
Bill

It does not have 48v phantom power. That is why dynamics work but
condensers don't.

Sure, I have one. The full manuals are available from Teac for about $20
including the service and operator's manuals.

It has preamps, but no phantom power supply. What do you want for something
that runs on 5V rails? If you want to use mikes that require phantom power,
you will need an outboard phantom box.

I have a DAP20 and a manual. About the only thing you need to know is
how to handle the program numbering. I replied to someone about that
here in rec.audio.pro a month or so ago and you can probably find the
message with a little prodding on Google.

No rumor. It has mic preamps. There's a line/mic/digital input
selector switch, and in the mic position, the XLR connectors have
enough gain to use with microphones under reasonable conditions.

That's because the mic inputs don't provide phantom power. The are,
however, balanced, so you can use an outboard phantom power supply.
Audio-Technica, among others, makes a couple. Take a look at
http://www.audio-technica.com/guide/other/access/index.html to get an
idea of what you need.
The successor to your recorder, the DA-P1, has phantom powered mic
inputs, as well as slightly better mic preamps and digital inputs that
are more tolerant of the format of modern A/D converters. The DA-P20
is from the early SCMS copy protection days and it's pretty fussy
about digital data coming in that looks like you might be copying a
CD. I find that it doesn't work directly from some converters, and
needs the aid of my Digital Domain FCN-1 format converter to force
some flags in the data stream to settings that the recorder likes.
