I have this old Behringer compressor from '94-ish (MDX-1000). Whatever.
While not genius sounding by any means, it's sometimes useful for certain
things.

My little writing/pre-production setup is moving to a commercial space soon,
and I was getting things together today. Since I'll do anything to avoid
actually working, I cracked it open to see if there's anything I can do to
either break it or make it better.

The circuit is really pretty simple. There's a few IC's though, which I'm
not sure about:

Each channel has two 8 pin IC's on either side of a dbx 1252 (RMS level
detector) which are marked BEHR BE027. I'm guessing these must be VCAs.

There's an 8 pin inline large brown wafer near the input marked "Behringer
Audio Detector BE 501". Since the box has a switch between hard and soft
knee, I'm guessing this might have to do with that function.

There's three 14 pin IC's, labeled GS GL319, and then two are also marked
9319 and the other 9320. General Semiconductors is now part of Vishay, and I
can't find anything about either of these part numbers. Does anyone know
what they are?

There's three transistors, which are unmarked, clustered around the output.
There's also one TL072 op amp--I know what that is.

I'm thinking about swapping some of these parts for something else (THAT
2180 VCAs and THAT 2252 RMS detector?). Are those GS parts worth swapping?
Does anyone know what that B.A.D. BE501 might be? I'm assuming that those
are Behringer branded OEM parts. If so, who does the manufacturing of IC's
and the like for them?

I don't have a specific desing goal exactly--less grainy and "clamped"
sounding, perhaps a little less noisy. (Design goals remind me of calling
shots while playing pool--when I was a kid I couldn't believe that anyone
could have that much control over the table as to actually declare an
intention.)

I realize that this might be a futile exercise but I find it perversely
pleasing to try, even when there's smarter/less stoopid ways to get better
kit happening. And yes, I have a bunch of RNC's (among others).

Some people spend thousands hot-rodding Honda Civics. To each his own.
