View Full Version : Difference between AT4033a and AT4033CL

I am thinking about getting an Audio Techinca 4033. A lot of reviews
and gear lists I read talked about the 4033a. The model Audio Technica
is selling now is the 4033cl. I went to the Audio Technica website and
all the specs were exactly the same, so I was wondering if anyone here
has used both or knows of the difference between the two. I assume
it's pretty minor, but I am curious. Thanks.

I think its just a difference in the shockmount. The older 4033 had a spider
type while the newer model has a ring mainly to suspend the mic.

4033a says it is "capacitor" and 4033cl says "condenser". I believe the
"a" was discontinued and re-released as the "cl". Garth is right, there
was a shockmount change too. I preferred to not take chances and hunted
down an original 4033a since I've heard that sound and liked it a lot,
esp on the 3D CD female vocals. Sorry I don't have direct comparison
info.

You realize that "capacitor" and "condenser" mean the same thing,
don't you?

I have a 4033 and a 4033a. I use them interchangeably and as a stereo pair.
I could never tell the difference in a blind shoot out.

Just thought it was curious they would change the description in the re-
release, I guess "condenser" is more marketing-friendly, since they were
rewriting the spec sheets anyway. I tend to be suspicious that other
stuff changed, perhaps not, but there are always discussions going about
how a "new, improved" version is never as good as the original...
