View Full Version : snap, crackle and pop on mbox

Hi,
I just fired up my new mbox this week. I'm using a new Dell Inspiron
5150 laptop with a P4 3.06 (no hyperthreading), 512MB RAM and XP Pro.
I'm recording to the native HD at the moment. I'm plugging a Strat
direct into the mbox and I'm using the Instrument input setting.

The signal routes fine and the laptop and the mbox are both performing
well. The only problem I'm having is occassional pops and crackles
when I play slightly hard on the guitar. The levels are all very safe
but I still get the popping, if it's clipping it's not registering on
the meters. It's not as harsh a sound as clipping, it's just an
annoying pop and crackle. I plugged the guitar into a DI and switched
the input on the mbox to Line but the popping still occurs. The only
thing that eases the popping is to play softly but that's not really a
solution.

Does anyone have any tips for recording a guitar or any percussive
instrument direct on a mbox? Has anyone experienced what I'm
describing?

Thanks!

You may be overdriving the MBox preamp. Try plugging the guitar into a compressor or limiter pedal before going into the MBox.
