I looked up the 624's and the price is pretty good for such a good speaker,
if it is anything like the 824. You might also check out the Alesis Monitor
one active...a little cheaper I think. I've had great luck working with
those and had a similar setup that was close to the wall.
Good luck,

Ken,
I just bought an HR624 for the center channel in my home theater. It's a
great speaker. But for a control room I'd definitely get the larger 824s if
you can manage. If you get 624s you'll also want a subwoofer, which costs a
LOT more than the difference between the 624s and 824s. The 824s are good to
below 40 Hz, which is low enough to not need a sub.

Ken-
If you like the "sound" and imaging of the HR824's, you'll probably
like the 624's as well. However, while their low end is impressive
considering their size, it's not the same as that of the 824's, and
they're not nearly as powerful. But I don't think you'll find
anything better for less...certainly not anything as close to the
824's. I've worked with the 824's a lot and have the 624's in my own
studio (albeit with a subwoofer...but I worked with them without the
sub and got fine results).

PS Ethan, nice meeting you in person at AES.

The m1's are ok, but not HR824 good. if the 624s are in the same league as
the 824's (and I think they are), the m1 mk2 actives are toys by comparison.
I just went from m1's as my primarys to the 824's so have a good perspective
on this. As soon as I hooked up the 824's I started hearing things that were
a little more than a few cents out of tune, < 10 milliseconds off, etc and
this stuff has nothing to do with the extended bass response of the 824 over
the 624.
I fixed the mud problems first... this is where the 824's are grand.
I just finished remixing my entire project on them. The results are telling
when you A/B the old mixes/new mixes in the car, at a club or on a
boombox... anywhere. Hopefully they sound good in the A&R offices: ) (now,
where is that hydraulic, concrete limiter?)
However, for the money, the m1's are outstanding. I mix bassy music so they
just weren't right for me. My lower octaves in my mixes were always too loud
with the M1's and wasn't hearing everything. I made an uninformed decision.
I am selling mine to my brother at a loss. He does acoustic/vocal only so
they are perfect for him to get his mix in the ballpark. I am doing his
final mixes at my place so the M1's are great for him.
For rock they might be fine. You probably arent fine tuning 50-80 hz in to
be represented, yet not blow up club soundsystem sub woofers for yer kick
drum, or get in the way of the bass's little sub edge.
Just check your bottom end very carefully at the end of the day and be
careful not to jack it up in the mix to make the speakers sound good while
monitoring. Turn up the bass on the monitor EQ or something if trying to
impress someone(or yourself: ).
