i'm thinking about purchasing a SB Audigy I Platinum for recording.
i'd like the sound to be clean, but i'm not a pro.

are there better cards in the price range?

would the M-Audio Delta 410 or 2496 be a much better choice?

The Audigy doesn't really have good 24-bit support as they claim. They say
"24 bit performance", and by that they mean there are 24-bit DACs that help
improve the noise ratings, but you don't really get access to anything but
16 bits in your application. I've had questionable luck with it at best.
Also, the sample rate is internally locked to 48khz on the card, and it can
cause problems when using for multitrack audio with samples going out of
sync if they are different sample rates.

For very basic recording and playback and no major multitrack work, it's
fine. Decently clean sound. For any reasonably serious work, find a pro
card.

Imo yes. I recently tried a Midiman Audiophile & really liked it.

The general consensus is that anything is better than a Soundblaster.
I haven't had any experience with them since my SBlive which was maybe 5
years ago and that was definately not suitable for recording.
