Just a quick note to let you know that Guitar Center has a bunch of
Oktava Mics on sale.
The ribbon ML-52 I just bought for $199.00 IS THE BOMB for electric
guitar amps.
And the MC-012 is also great for acoustic guitars. I heard they where
selling for $49.00 (I paid much more a few years ago)
No........... I don't work there, just thought you all would like to
know. Hell of a deal.

Do you know that in Europe you cannot find a MC-012 for less of 300 euros =
300 dollars.?
A lot of people in USA talks about this is a good mic for the price, but in
Europe the price is x4?
I should like to buy an Oktava, but not at this money.
Jose.

Seems odd to me that the distributor is in the UK and it cost more to
get it there. Just doesn't make much sense. Sorry about your luck. It is
a great mic. I know the ribbon (ML-52) has a list price of $799.00 us
dollars, but for $199.00 it's a steal

Go to GCPRO.COM. The online store link takes you to Musiciansfriend.com
and they do not have em'.
But I emailed the regional rep and he said you could order thru them.
See the reps links at GCPRO.COM
Or just call one of the stores. Same as mail order if there is not a
store near you.

I called the Edina, MN store today and they were 199. Even had him put
one on hold. Then I did a little google research and they didn't fare
very well. I decided to pass.

I saw this and went over to see what was up. All the Oktava's look like
the build quality is super hokey. Even at those discounts I couldn't
bring myself to get the ribbon mic (I'm saving for a Royer). I did
however get a couple of the MK-012's but after hearing them they are going
back tomorrow. Not so hotso.
The trip turned out to be worth it though... I picked up a used AT 4051
for $129.

I believe our own much beloved Scott Dorsey, who usually gives Oktavas more
than a fair shake, has given this particular microphone in stock form the
thumbs down. Otherwise I would have bought one.
And why would someone use a ribbon microphone to record amped guitar?

That's about the only thing I ever see recommended for recording amps
nowadays. Granted, it's a Royer, but still a ribbon.

The ML-52 may be the bomb, but thanks, I'll let it explode over at your
place. $49 for the MC012? Pretty much get what you pay for there.

Look farther. Dynamics and condensers on guitar amps are quite common.

Ribbon mikes generally don't like to see lots of low frequency air movement.
Kick drums will wreck them. Singers that blow into microphones will wreck
them. Dropping them will wreck them.
High frequency stuff, like an overdriven guitar amp, won't hurt them. The
stuff has to be well below the resonant point of the diaphragm to do damage.
The RCA BK-5 has long been a traditional standby on guitar amps. It can be
a little tricky to place if you like miking the back of cabinets, though.

Read the AEA manual for their new ribbons.
http://www.wesdooley.com/pdf/r84_short_manual_ver1.pdf
Word is, no puffs of air. Loud is OK, puffs are death.
So pull back a couple of feet from your Marshall 4x12 stack.
At $1000 each for AEA R84 or a little more for a Royer,
I'm not sure that they fit "too valuable" compared to lots
of other mics that are used a lot.

Ok, I took the challenge. ML-52 is indeed available from GC for $200.00
US. I picked one up yesterday. It went through a day of usage. Probably
not the typical usage most have in mind. About a dozen bass tracks to
cut for as many songs. We used a Countryman 85 DI into a Great River MP4
preamp. The instrument output of the DI was sent to a Pignose on a stand
about one meter off the floor. The ML-52 was three inches from the front
of the Pignose and fed into an MSS-10. Gain on the Pig was kept down to
keep it quasi-clean. It wasn't very loud in the tracking room. About
right for low practice.
The bassist was pretty skeptical about the Pig + ML-52 combination, but
was inclined to humor me. the DI channel was delayed 1-3 mS from the Pig
channel to taste. Brought up the DI only and had a nice, solid, clean
bass sound. Brought up and mixed in the combo channel and that clean
bass got big, round and fat. Very big and fat. The solid bottom came
from the DI, harmonic fatness from the combo. Now, a good deal of the
sound of an instrument (like 90%) comes from the musician's fingers and
his axe, so the setup described isn't going to cure bad sounding bass
playing. But this treatment with a touch of EQ gave a sound that we
found useful for the day. The bassist decided we shouldn't change
anything and was even more pleased with the sound as the day wore on and
he heard it on the mains in better context instead of the just the cue
mix.
A big thankyou to Scott Dorsey who clued me into the usefulness of the
Pignose. It is recorded regularly and serves me well.
As always, YMMV, void where prohibited by law, yada yada yada. Just our
observations and impressions from a day's tracking.

Think about it. You have a very thin piece of metal ribbon in a magnetic
field. Not so good with kick drums where you have a big poof of air with
every hit, but the wind from a guitar amp seldom has that sort of air moving
power unless you drop the guitar.

Thanks for the play by play. Very neat. Syas more about the pignose than it
does the Oktava. Was that an original pig or one of the later models?

Ty,
Late night writing isn't my clearest. The challenge to me was to find
the ML-52 for $200.00 at GC. The jury here is still out about the sound
of the ML-52. It was useful in the application as described. Talking
into it (thanks Harvey & Ty) sounded interesting. It seems to have
pretty good nulls on the sides. I will give it a try in some other
applications. It does reinforce the desire to hear some more ribbons
such as the AEA R84, Royer 121, Beyer M160 etc. Already have an M260dx
and M500, of which the latter is top choice for one vocalist here. The
Pignose is a recent production model. I have no idea how the original
sounds but the one I have is quite useful. Originally acquired as a
practise amp. I'm learning a little AG & EG, much to the dismay of the
household, at least for several years.
